you don't need to unlock the phone to get different themes.. I'd suggest unlocking it to Flash a custom rom though as the stock one is kinda slow. Themes can be installed with cab files, but there are themes for win mo 6.1 and there are themes for win mo 6.5 so you really need to watch what you are installing.

I held out for the longest time, but finally just flashed my first rom today (Mighty Rom 5). Ran the unlocker, checked that the boot screen said "CMONEX", then ran the mighty rom installer. Everything worked fine, and I'm quite happy.
