Because we get it for free, with ESRP we can get repairs/replacements from Sprint for free. Sprint is actually not supposed to replace cracked screens, but apparently in this case they are.
The 100$ is for insurance, which may or may not be worthwhile for you now since the deductible increase. Thats for if you lose your phone or accidentally blended it. This guy won't have access to insurance since he doesn't pay the premium, so he'd be SOL if he lost it or it broke in a way that isn't covered under warranty, i.e. water damage.
