Easy choice I think.

I don't think that it is optional to get the insurance after the fact, it is something you have to pay on a monthly basis and I'm almost positive their is a grace / waiting period before you can file a claim (30-60 days) even after you purchase the insurance. It is totally up to the Sprint customer service team (accounts) whether they will waive the deductible.

When you say $84, I guess you're talking about the Asurion coverage, I can't say people who have used that coverage have found replacements to be a hassle. Most who have used it say they got a new Touch Pro without hassles.

To me, the hassle is paying a high percentage for coverage of a product that would not cost very much to replace, even if purchased new again. If I purchased a new car and was told insurance would cost nearly 20% of the car's value I'd find another insurance agent. I don't pay a high percentage to insure high ticket items, so I'm not going to pay a high percentage to insure low ticket items.

Getting Sprint to deal with it for $55 is less than $110 (50% less) and hassle free. And the $55 is only paid if something breaks. That does not cover having it run over by a truck, but if I had a history of having devices run over by trucks I might buy some coverage for that. Worst case, a brand new Touch Pro can be purchased on Ebay for $300.

I just made a new post which contains the latest Insurance price/requirements etc in it under the HTC Touch Pro Forum (General Info).

I was correct about not being able to get the insurance at the time of repair, it must be purchased within the 1st 30 days of having the phone. The exception to this is if you go and get the phone repaired, you pay whatever the cost is for the repair, they will allow you 30 days from the time of that repair to get the optional insurance on the phone for $7/month.

I don't consider $7/month a steep price for a phone that cost me $300, especially considering how willing they seem to be about waiving the insurance deductible (so far). As for my luck with this, it might be an exception to their normal policy..that I'm not sure of, but I am thankful that they have been willing to help me that's for sure.

Best Wishes.

Yea I know all about the insurance policy and waiting period. When I mention $55, that's the minimum Sprint repair fee and what they'll charge if you want a warranty replacement while having them process it so you get a replacement quickly instead of waiting weeks.

With the Asurion coverage, $7/month is $84/year. After April 19th, the replacement deductible goes up to $100. Which means after a year a replacement with Asurion will cost $184 and in a year I think Touch Pros will be selling new on Ebay for not much more than that. I mention a year, because the HTC warrnaty last a year.

Sprint's not bothering with the insurance deductible, because everyone buying a Touch Pro new is still covered by the HTC warranty. So Sprint can just settle it with HTC themselves. It would be WRONG of Sprint to charge the insurance deductible to anyone paying $7/month if the issue was just a device defect. Which is covered by the HTC warranty. People paying just $4/month for Sprint's repair service should be getting free replacements for warranty issues too. For now, the insurance only is a resolution for damaging the device or a lost/stolen device.

I've paid the Asurion monthly for years, but I'm at a point now where I see it as nothing but a rip off I've never made much of any use of. I've never actually "needed" it at all. Every device I've needed to replace was under warranty and those that have made it beyond a year always lasted until I wanted something else. Based off years of usage and 4 prior devices, Asurion is a raw deal for me, especially after April 19th. I'm ending all my coverage before then. Then, I only pay if I actually have a problem.

Man, you have me thinking hard about that approach. I'm a premier member so I get upgrades every year instead of every 2 AND I have never damaged or had one stolen but have replace 10+ devices under warranty since getting the 6700 new back in the day.

Funny thing of it is, there is always something wrong with our phone, manufacturer wise, so it really depends on if you can live with it or not until it's time to replace (replace and then sell) the device with the next in line.

Re: Experiences with HTC manufacturers warranty

Mrrogers1, I'm premier customer too. Been with Sprint well over 10 years and paid plenty of the monthly insurance payments over the years. But looking back at the data for my own experiences and usage, I can't justify the repair plan or insurance for my own situation. It works much better for me if I pay when something actually breaks. And after a year, like you I've got the special upgrade pricing if I want to move on to a newer device.

I can't say I'll "never" buy a repair/replacement plan again, but the numbers for it would have to work for me. If I was buying from a store that offered a repair/replacement plan at what I felt was a good price I might go for it.

Re: Experiences with HTC manufacturers warranty

I got my wife's phone back yesterday. They replaced the touch screen as we requested. I mailed it in 10 days ago, so I am pretty pleased with the turnaround time. We were expecting 3 weeks from what I saw here. Unfortunately, the mogul that we had as a backup phone got washed. So my wife was using an old phone (her third phone in 2 weeks). So when I got the vogue back last night, I asked if I could add insurance. When they asked me if the phone was new to my account, I said no and they denied the insurance. However, due to another issue, I ended up talking to account services. When he checked, he said the phone was listed as new to the account. So after washing the mogul, we are going to spend the $7 a month for insurance.

Re: Experiences with HTC manufacturers warranty

Sadly enough, I'll be replacing my phone a bit sooner than I thought... My keyboard took a poop on me today so I'll be heading to the first Sprint store local to me to replace. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Time to flash back and lock this puppy up... I'm taking NO chances.
