It certainly couldn't hurt. If you can't get through the boot screen, I would think that it would be.

Unfortunately a hard reset is the only solution. The same thing happened to me. Thankfully I made a backup before trying it. That's always a good idea when you will be replacing any system file.

How do I backup my entire phone so I can simply restore back to the way I had it? Is it called sprite backup? I thought it was for contacts only.

well once a hard reset is done, the restore is then done to replace the stock settings right?

I haven't used Sprite before, but with SPB Backup, it creates an executable file that you simply run from your desktop while the phone is connected via ActiveSync. I have never had to restore from these, but you would just run the executable that is created...
