Official Keyboard Lag Thread

There are quite a few posts scattered through these forums talking about keyboard lag. I never had any keyboard lag with the stock rom on my Touch Pro, but with ALL of the custom roms, the keyboard lag is just terrible. I am constantly having to correct lag errors...no way I can easily keep my typing flowing. I do quite a bit of emailing, not just texting on my TP so this is becoming a major sticking point for me. I really love all of the tweaks on the custom roms, but the keyboard lag is one thing that I can't get past.

Has anyone identified what is actually causing this to happen? Does it have anything to do with a specific ROM starting point (ie - Fuze vs Verizon vs Sprint stock rom)?

I think I'm going to flash back to the stock rom and start customizing myself. What is everyone else doing? Are you just dealing with the lag?

I had terrible lag with the stock rom.. that is why I went to a custom rom myself.

I feel it's better by far with a custom rom.

But I still get some lag.

I made a cab to fix the lag for all custom roms.....
there is a txt file inside the zip if you rather do it manually.

Its called WinMo. My theory is that it just doesnt operate in landscape mode well. I have seen this on all landscape enabled phones.

What does this cab do to fix the lag?

Just want to chime in that both my brother and I (both with Sprint Touch Pros) have experienced this on stock and non stock roms. It even gets to the point where we giggle and make fun of Microsoft (I mean who else is there to blame at times like these) and rant...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd
"InitialDelay"=dword: dec 0 (default value = 375)
"RepeatRate"=dword: dec 8 (default value - 8 )

See my initial statement above. Your not gonna fix it unless you dump windows. It has happaned on all slider and flip phones that have WinMo on them. I dont know about non HTC devices. Anyone?

I can confirm THIS DOES fix the lag.....u stated the lag u were having was for the touch pro and i have had numerous people (from my other site spj) use this and even speed up the lag on the new mighty rom.....it does work. did u soft reset after u applied the cab or settings????

I have never head that on a stock rom there was a keyboard lag....my theroy is that the lag from custom roms come from the fact that the sys is extremly fast and the original settings for the keyboard lag isnt changed....the stock rom sys is slow, so therefore the lag has to be longer to match with the sys....when a faster sys is in a rom the lag will not match so thats when u see a lag....the cab i made is made to match closer to the faster sys's to fix the lag....the accuser is the only person who has said my cab hasnt worked.....most likely do to a non soft reset after instalation.

I have no lag with Juicy's rom, however in order to get rid of it completely, you can disable xt9 in the registry but you will loose function of the compact qwerty and get the standard windows word completion back. I can post a cab later if you want

I can get more talking about the stock ROM lag if you want but I am sure you beleive me now.....

Even CNet sees the lag on the Sprint Stock ROM.

So.... No lag on stock? Yeah, there is.

Lag just may be differnt for all of us. What I consider Lag and what you consider Lag could be differnt in this case.

But any WinMo slider or flip will lag. Its winmo....

regardless i stand by my theroy and i also stand by the fact that i know my cab works.....could be different depending on custom rom(with mighty's newest it works flawlessly). I have many many people who can confirm....but theres always room for disagreement...i have a few other lagfix cabs with different settings but this one seemed to work the best with the most recent updated roms......

Im not saying it doesnt work. Im just saying that the lag is inherient to WinMo, not just customs. My 6800 was really bad.

When I am talking about lag...I am talking about typing on the keyboard becoming completely useless. I type really fast and on 5 custom roms I've used, it can't keep up with my typing...often producing double characters or simply missing 5 or 6 key presses. This does not occur using the stock rom. I can type as fast as my little fingers will go without any issues. Sure there may be a bit of "lag", but it always captures exactly what I am typing...no omissions and no added characters.

Thank you for clarifying it.

I guess your one of th elucky ones that dont see Lag on a stock ROM. Your very lucky. Even cnet talks about the keyboard lag.

Disabling xt9 completely got rid of the lag for me, but like I said, it messes with the compact qwerty so if you use it, this tweak is not for you. I have attached 2 cabs, one that disables it and one that enables it back in case you need it (Don't think an uninstall will revert it back)

This also brings back the good old word suggestion from windows instead of that annoying black bar. Enjoy!

I have tried all the "lag keyboard" fixes I can find and not one has worked. It's just windows just like Scott said.

I started experiencing this lag on the latest Migthy ROM 4.11 but on 4.10 I didn't have it... I just went back to 4.10 but while flashing my friend sent me this thread so I'm going to re-install 4.11 and give it another try I'll keep you guys posted

Jesus people. Its not windows mobile. Its the HTC keyboard driver for the touch pro called XT9 It also supports the onscreen keyboard. The thing is my Phone has **** tons of lag on the keyboard. Tried all the top win-mo roms and such. On my old XV6800 there is NO lag. I remember I dumped my XV6800 back into the box and I just re-opened it to see if Scott is right about the Win Mo thing. He's wrong, the xv6800 instantaneously types a letter. Try it yourself scott if you still have your XV6800 lying around.

Uhhh, I was just in a VZW store yesterday and played with a Titan and it does have lag......

If you think its the XT9 I will try to cook up a ROM without it tonight. Its easy to pull out... Any specific build you would like to see this on? If this is correct and you are right about the keyboard driver (I was always told the same thing but talking about drivers on a phone sounds crazy so I blame it on the OS) then I will be cooking all of my ROM's with out that crap.

The XT9 is the box that pops up, right? I hate that thing!

Your one of the lucky ones....

I really dont think the interpertaion of lag is the same for all of us... I really dont. But anyways.....

Im going to try and cook a ROM with out XT9 tonight and see what happens. I will report back.

Re: Official Keyboard Lag Thread

If you take out xt9, the lag will be gone but the compact qwerty won't work tight.

You can also just disable it.

Has anyone actually tried what I posted earlier?

Re: Official Keyboard Lag Thread

i only really normally experice recognizable keyboard lag when texting
that cab doesnt do didly squat, plus its only for when to start repeating, and how fast to repeat, so for the life of me i dont know why anyone thinks that would fix regular keyboard lag unless im hodling down 1 key for a long time

for the text the lag comes with the built in windows texting program(i guess a palm port)because when i installed coddppc win 5.0 threaded text theres is 0 lag. install the default win 6.1 back, super lag when texting

jaggrey 02-25-2009 10:38 AM

Re: Official Keyboard Lag Thread

I thought it was more system-wide, not just in texting. Altho in playing with an 800w that thing has no lag whatsoever.... made me consider the device for a lil bit. I don't think the (Sprint) Treo Pro has much lag either; in the time I played with it I didn't really notice.

I know with my phone the lag got really bad to where it would stutter and it would act as if keys were stuck, but then recently the keyboard died completely. My refurb should be here today... I'm hoping my old one just had issues.

i think its just that some people type faster then others.. i know i average about 50 wpm on the Touch Pro, and on its best day if i type a 160 char txt, when im done it will be about 4 words behind.. on its best day

well tru if somebody only types 5 words a minute then no you'll see no lag even if serious lag exists

the true teller is hooking your touch pro up to your home computer to use the keybaord to type a text message and see how long it takes for the touch pro to catch up to your typing!!!

I type pretty fast on a full keyboard but on the TP I type slooowwwwllyyy... Hehe, Specially because this is my first smart phone and I am not used to it at all. So the positive said is that I don't have lag, ever, hehe.

I would like to add that I have used the Sprint ROM from day one and I have had serious lag issues. I get better response when I am not using T9, but either way there are lag issues.

Re: Official Keyboard Lag Thread

wow someone must've read my mind
I had to go back to my mogul to hack it to us cellular and I noticed the keyboard was blazing fast. This was with the stock US Cellular rom and it was downright god fast with DCD cab.

Now I've been through (and I counted) 9 moguls. 2 were brans new, 7 were refurbs and there was no keyboard lag on any rom. but there were so many noticeable differences with the mogul versus touch pro

screen refresh was faster as well...even without touchflo 3d on the touch pro and everything was relatively stock and fast. So I tend to wonder a few things

1. is winmo capable of using higher ram devices? So far the answer is not really (even with an increased page pool, because in order to get speed I have to bump up the page pool and somehow my mogul is still faster at somethings is insane)

2. is this an htc bug in the touch pros?

3. Is it possible to pull some of the settings that some of the other chefs used for the keyboard, speed settings and so on to create a wonderful rom for speed?

Just some questions...freaky I know...I think I'll start on it soon

i hate to burst everyone's bubble on this but on Merdin's 3.6 rom, the cab file does most certainly fix the lag. the change in operation is quite amazing actually. before the patch the slide out keyboard was practically unusable. i just atted the patch, did a softrest and tried again. it does work. at least on the rom i'm using.

Using the Stock Rom, I still have some lag, but there is an improvement, but what made me so happy about this was getting Word Auto complete back. I missed it! All my other PPCs had it.

Thanks again for Posting the disable Xt9. Made my Day!!!!

Re: Official Keyboard Lag Thread

My titan experienced it big time, i figured it was for obvious reasons, 64mb of RAM sharing with the pagepool. I noticed the same on my stock TP, scotts rom, kks rom, dream rom, hell ive noticed it to some extent on others. my tinkering have shown 3 things to help. 1. big pagepool, if you dont have anything over 20 it seems like its only worse. 2. make sure the t9 is off. 3. on certain roms, ive noticed if i turn of TF3D it works great. currently i'm flashed to mightyrom and have not had hardly any lag issues what so ever.
