Ah, thanks...and good question. I'd have to say that the phone wasn't locked, since the touch-screen still responded as normal (i.e. when "on").
The problem has been happening lately where the screen remains in dimmed mode (screen still responsive), even when NOT plugged in to external power sources.
For anyone else working on similar problems: this happened again this morning while in Opera (hmmm). I switched to calculator, and let it lie to see if this would rattle some sense into the backlighting logic. It didn't. I tried merely pushing Opera into the background by going to the "today" screen. Same. I then went back to opera--the original app (and usual suspect)--and went back from what was an ad-rich web page over to the google home page. Right on schedule the backlight goes out. It appears that some script had been--at least in
this case--retaining backlight power. I was able to repeat the behavior by simply going back the same ad-rich page, so it seems that scripts indeed have some bearing on power level retension. Or maybe Opera was just excited about the prospect of losing weight in 30 days or less.
