I only read the first two pages of this thread, but I'm amazed I didn't see the clear answer in the first two pages...

SMS is limitd to 160 chars in the specification.

The 1000 limit message you are talking about is MMS and not SMS.

SMS = Text Message
MMS = Picture Message
