Granted I am extremely pleased that it was able to play one of my recent animes I threw at it (Vampire Knight Guilty) so I know I won't have to convert that, but all other high-res ones are a no-go
This is just the case with the TP. If you want good playback of VGA resolution video, you need to jump through quite a few hoops, which include re-encoding older rips and reducing quality substantially on new rips compared to what was possible on older hardware. The hardware-software package in its current form is borderline for that type of playback.

It's unfortunate.

If I wanted to play this movie of my sons high school graduation for family off my phone for christmas what would I have to do / use to get this going? I assume I would need something to reduce the file size, and some kind of player for my phone. As its the holidays the cheaper I can do this the better.

Links help the slow guy.
It depends how that .avi is encoded. Try TCPMP and see if you get anywhere near decent playback: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380387

Assume that Coreplayer will give you 10-20% better playback. http://www.coreplayer.com/

If it does not play even half decently, you will need to re-encode the video. In this case, you can either do divx/xvid encoding and playback in TCPMP or Coreplayer (AlltoAvi is a good free solution http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/), or you can perhaps try out the MP4 encoding that the re-encoding proponents talk about, which will allow you to use WMP for playback ... you will have to ask them what the best software and settings are as I personally avoid re-encoding and using WMP whenever possible.
