It depends how that .avi is encoded. Try TCPMP and see if you get anywhere near decent playback:

Assume that Coreplayer will give you 10-20% better playback.

If it does not play even half decently, you will need to re-encode the video. In this case, you can either do divx/xvid encoding and playback in TCPMP or Coreplayer (AlltoAvi is a good free solution
http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/), or you can perhaps try out the MP4 encoding that the re-encoding proponents talk about, which will allow you to use WMP for playback ... you will have to ask them what the best software and settings are as I personally avoid re-encoding and using WMP whenever possible.
