Re: Skype 2.5 On Sprint Touch Pro
I don't have any more information on 2.5 Gold except that a bunch of bugs have been fixed, and the user experience has been "smoothed" and "refined" on new devices, whatever that means.
Also, Skype 3.0 Beta will be announced later today at GSMA Mobile World Congress. This version will include two new features: SMS and file transfer. However, it looks like they are going to charge for SMS, and file transfer isn't that big of a deal since we can do that already. Anyway, if you're interested, the announcement should appear here sometime today: http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/ |

Re: Skype 2.5 On Sprint Touch Pro
The reason Skype is dicey on Sprint or Verizon's implementation of 3g (EvDO/Rev.A) is because of an inherent shortcoming of the technology. Speed and latency is tower-proximity dependent. Moreso than that of UMTS/HSPA. EvDO/Rev.A is a great technology for throughput, don't get me wrong, but there is a reason why your phone goes into 1X mode when you make a call. Don't get throughput and speed mixed up.
VoIP, even Skype's propreitary version of it is extremely time-sensitive. That means it needs the lowest latency (ping time, or round trip time) to be of any use. Being a firewall engineer has taught me this due to packet inspection and some companies wanting to pipe VoIP over VPNs, both of which have the ability to kill latency (moreso the latter due to encryption/decryption on each endpoint). H.323 and SIP have a maximum one-way latency reccomendation of 150ms. That is one way, so a ping time would have to be around 300ms or less consistently to get a call of any *useable* quality. EvDO/Rev.A gets an average of, say, 230ms ping times. You may say "Hey, that should be an acceptable ping time then and it should work great!" In theory, yes, it would work with some conversation stepping. But this is the real world. your latency on a cellphone jumps all over the place. That is a problem. The VoIP program has to compensate for that, which can make a call choppy. With Skype, it has to decode its own propreitary VoIP protocol, which I believe is encrypted (remember, encrypt/decrypt kills latency) and then pipe it through your phone's OS. Therein lies the rub. While you may have an acceptable ping time, Skype still has to do a lot of processing on an OS running the rest of the phone. That's another reason it is dicey. HSPA is a little better-suited for mobile Skype because the technology simply has lower latency on the network end. So....did that answer your question? |

Re: Skype 2.5 On Sprint Touch Pro
any1 having problems receiving calls through skype? i tried calling the number they gave me when i signed up for the unlimited plan but i get a busy tone..
outgoing calls works great when i use the stock ear buds that came with the phone. I use it daily and even on 1x i hear the other caller clear.

Re: Skype 2.5 On Sprint Touch Pro
I have found Skype to work very well for me on EVDO. Domestic calls work with very little lag.
