Did you uncheck the today setting "timeout if not used for...." that was the second thing to uncheck.

Common sense says that heat is generated when the phone is in use. Furthermore, additional heat is generated when it's charging. So, you have heat while in use (since default power keeps phone on when charging) + heat from charging + trapped heat from sitting inside case = overheating resulting in hanging. Since setting the phone to turn off after 2 mins on external power it hasn't overheated or hung overnight.
