Well I am actually going to leave it this way for a while, with the purple showing slightly it kinda has that two tone effect, from some angles it looks black and others it looks kinda purple. LOL, even one of my buddies was asking me how I got my cover like that and I said dude, its just fading slightly after a month or so. But like most other people, I will go to the sprint store here in atlanta for some battery covers to do some custom stuff.

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I am going to research rubberized coatings. The chrome bezel would do well from a rubber coating and black finish.

Plus the feel would be more than welcomed...

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

would someone be able to send one of these pre-dyed covers to me? my local sprint stores don't even have this phone, therefore they don't have the back cover for them. i want one that is black. shoot me a PM, i'm willing to pay a reasonable price for it

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I'm dying mine as we speak, looking for some advice at the moment.

I've got some water in a pot, maybe an inch deep, just enough to cover the case twice over.

I'm using Rit's liquid dye, as black in powder wasn't available.

I put a tiny amount of dye in, I could probably do it again 15-20 more times with the amount of dye I used. It's on very low heat... still fairly hot, but I can reach in to pull it out.

It's been going for 5-6 minutes now, and it's been turning shades of purple... my fingers are picking up more dye than the case is it's about to dark purple now... but I've bought black dye, I want it black!

More dye? More heat?

Suggestions please

Edit: A bit awesome that no one stepped up for a simple question, but eh. Here's what I did:

1) Added TONS of dye... I think I had about a cup of water, and a cup of liquid dye
2) Added lots more heat... The water ended up steaming a little, no bubbles (possibly because of the high dye concentration?), but too hot to have my hand in
3) Let it sit for 30-40 minutes. It was in the water a LONG time, still, under bright light, the back looks purple-ish. I'm a bit disappointed, I'll probably do it again later with straight up dye.

Here is how it was BEFORE I did the more extreme measures up there...

That was with about 30 minutes of soak time in the low heat, low dye setup. It just turned a nice purple. Would have been GREAT if that was what I was going for. I've got an after pic but I'll upload it and add it later, it looks like everyone else's. The liquid dye doesn't require buffing. Came out beautifully smooth right off the bat.

If ur doing black then u really cant mess up. Just dont get the heat too high. I would also use a bit more water so u cut down the risk of warping the cover.

Not to be rude or anything but there are multiple suggestions contained in this thread as to how to do this. The original poster told us what he did in post #24 of this thread, there are other posters who posted what they did as well.

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I just want to know if anyone is seeing any fading or dye rubbing off on their hands?? I bought some black liquid and I'm itching to do the mod but don't want this rubbing off on my hands or in my pocket.

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

First, the original poster wasn't using liquid dye, it has changed things a little so I was hoping someone who had used it had a suggestion available.

Post #24 doesn't contain any information that I already didn't say that I covered here. It had been in the water for nearly 30 minutes to get that purple color listed above. I did look through the entire thread, was just following people's suggestions of "oh, don't use too much dye" and "oh, don't use too much heat" and they dye really wasn't taking very well.

It's still fairly dark, if a little purple-ish today. It doesn't appear to be coming off on my hands (my fingers are still mostly purple from coloring it yesterday though). My pants pocket still looks good too, it's been in there most of the day. It's still very fresh so if I'm not seeing any now, I doubt I will see any in significant amounts later. You should be good to go, just do it, you'll be glad you did! The liquid dye works well... just don't use much water, and be prepared to soak if for nearly an hour, I had to.
