Re: Bellsouth.net POP3 Problem

I understand the concept. Here's my problem. Last night as a test, I configured my phone with a friends Comcast POP3 email info. I was able to send and receive emails. Go figure. What's up with that?
Thx,
Phil.................=D>

Were you connected to his Comcast service via Wi-Fi? If so, you were a local user at that point.

I definitely want to help you (hopefully that's clear), but you gotta help yourself a bit too. Have you come up with an SMTP server that will allow you to authenticate for outgoing mail? You need to if you want to make this work regardless of where you are.

I reall do appreciate the help. I was not on WiFi at the time and I have since deleted his email account. I cannot check on the possibility of POWWEB SMTP, until this evening. I will do that and report back. I can always switch to Comcast for Broadband....might try that anyway.
Thx,
Phil........

Re: Bellsouth.net POP3 Problem

I went ahead and checked POWWEB for you, they do seem to allow remote sending if you authenticate. Their SMTP server is "smtp.powweb.com" Hopefully it works for you, I cannot really test it out since I don't have a username and password with them, of course.

Thank you much. I discovered that as well after you mentioned it. I have to get to my home PC for username/pwd. Don't use that login often.
Thank you much, hope it works.....might still change to Comcast just on general principle...also, prob is faster broadband.
Thx,
Phil...........

Well, Doc, I was able to login to my ops login on PowWeb and create an email address. Congured my AT&T email on my phone to use the PowWeb SMTP server, as you suggested. It WORKS....................................
That was way too easy. Thank you so much.
Also, found out that AT&T has anti-spam filters in place that supposedly keep you from sending emails from PCs not on your DSL line. Sounds like an evil plan...
Thx,
Phil............

Re: Bellsouth.net POP3 Problem

Bellsouth(AT&T) home dsl does not require authentication on outgoing emails (SMTP) unless you are using their business DSL. I have mail.bellsouth.net setup and working on my TP perfectly fine using both sprint data service and wifi. The only thing bellsouth will not allow you to do is send through a different SMTP server than mail.bellsouth.net on your computer network via port 25. So essentially anytime you have your TP on your home network and try to send email it must got out through bellouth SMTP server. Depending on your location you may have to add something to the SMTP server address. I live in New Orleans and in some cases I have to put mail.msy.bellsouth.net for it to work with MSY telling it I am in New Orleans.
