Re: Thought you all could use a laugh (at Sprint's expense)

Out of the box, with out enabling world roaming, I can verify that I can buy a local sim in Hong Kong and it works fine, as well as Vietnam, and works fine. Data worked great over gsm in Hong Kong, couldn't figure out the vietnamise documentation to turn on the data there though, but as well as it worked in Hong Kong, I doubt it would be any issue.

Just make sure you can find the APN Or Access point name in the SIM card documentation that needs to be entered to be able to make the data connection on GSM.

Woot! Cancun! I'll be there 10/31 - 11/7!

You shouldn't have a problem. I've been down with my Mogul and TP in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. I don't use my phone all that much, but when I did I had great service and fast data.

I paid $1.40/min voice, and $.002/KB. Didn't do any texting.

I'm definitely going to find a SIM down there and test it out just because I'm a nerd...

Based on other threads people say the pre-paid SIMs work well.

Re: Thought you all could use a laugh (at Sprint's expense)

I can confirm that TelCel SIM cards work. (TelCel is the only GSM/UMTS provider in Mexico, IIRC). I was down in Manzanillo and Guadalajara last month and this saved my *** multiple times over!

I had a bit of trouble activating it though. All of the instructions are in Spanish and it involves sending texts with your information to some number. You would probably have the best luck going into a TelCel store (they're everywhere) and finding someone who speaks English to assist you. Luckily, my fiancee speaks fluent Spanish so I was hooked up.

It's totally worth it. You're looking at $1 or so per minute back to the US or Canada versus $3 or $4, plus you get free incoming calls.

i went a few months ago. the internet also said it would rain the whole time. there were a few times where it got cloudy but it did not rain at all. the resort workers joked about how bad the internet forecasts were. i wouldnt worry about the rain unless there is a tropical storm/hurricane coming.

Re: Thought you all could use a laugh (at Sprint's expense)

Typical sprint... one of the many reasons I no longer have them. On another note, I think there may be CDMA scattered throughout parts of Mexico and the Caribbean because my last 3 trips down there included Cozumel, Belize, Honduras, Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman and my Samsung i760 and Touch Pro both worked in all locations. I had to check voicemail for work and had no problems with that, or making a few return phone calls. I was even getting data in most of the locations, and surprisingly, I didn't get a&& pounded on my bill either. The charges were reasonable.
