Quick question, Does the GPS work when you're using GSM international?
I know under the touch pro 1 it doesn't.

So how do you go about getting setup before you leave? Do I have to purchase a sim card from somewhere and are their special rates? I.e. I live in Florida, but my wife and I will be taking a cruise throughout mexico, bahamas etc... Are their cheaper options than roaming on Sprint's network since I can load in another SIM?

Yes it does work, takes a little while if your QuickGPS data expired because it needs to seek all the satellites again (cold boot).

Most SIM cards has the ability to setup the parameters by themselves and the network. So pretty much just put it in and set it to GSM only and you are good to go.

Where do I get the SIM card from? I will be going to Thailand in December and want to make sure I will be able to use my phone. Also, will I be able to use my current data plan and check email and stuff?

When you arrive in Thailand, ask the locals for a prepaid SIM card that you can purchase from the store, and make sure it does has data plan on it so you can use the data.

Don't use any SIM card from any US providers, it'll just be roaming rate (EXPENSIVE).

steved does china mobile have prepaid sim with data? i've tried to use data on my tilt and it didnt work..

Well it's somewhat different in China... You can purchase a prepaid card for what, 500 Yuan (about $75 USD) deposit, and you can use that with in a time period (usually 30 days). Data usually IS included (EDGE though, 3G aren't that widely rolled out in there). The catch is the data you use is not unlimited for a fee but charged against your deposit by the amount you use.

Do keep in mind that in China there is really no free roaming, you get charged local rate when you are in the province (some times city) where your SIM Card is purchased, but you will be charged a roaming rate both on voice AND data when you go out that area. So in a long run it's going to be expensive.

What I suggest is that if you are going to move around the country a lot, stay with voice, because data can simply drain your deposit FAST and it's not that easy to recharge it, keep in mind that most ppl there does NOT speak English well, unless you have someone who you can trust to translate for you.

Just finished my testing with swaping a sim card from another carrier, and I can tell you it works. I put a sim card of my friend's phone,from a carrier here in Puerto Rico that's called "Claro" and set the tp2 for gsm only and inmediatly the edge sign appears and when I make calls it was working as it was my friend's phone, his phone # appeared not mine(my sprint own)my tp2 work just fine, receive and make calls normally, now i'll be looking forward testing with at&t here in Puerto Rico. I;ll let you know.
