Well it's somewhat different in China... You can purchase a prepaid card for what, 500 Yuan (about $75 USD) deposit, and you can use that with in a time period (usually 30 days). Data usually IS included (EDGE though, 3G aren't that widely rolled out in there). The catch is the data you use is not unlimited for a fee but charged against your deposit by the amount you use.

Do keep in mind that in China there is really no free roaming, you get charged local rate when you are in the province (some times city) where your SIM Card is purchased, but you will be charged a roaming rate both on voice AND data when you go out that area. So in a long run it's going to be expensive.

What I suggest is that if you are going to move around the country a lot, stay with voice, because data can simply drain your deposit FAST and it's not that easy to recharge it, keep in mind that most ppl there does NOT speak English well, unless you have someone who you can trust to translate for you.
