That's the proximity sensor doing its job detecting when the phone is up against your face. If you aren't aware its there,it can seen erratic.

The proximity sensor is directly behind the HTC logo on the top left of the device. If that portion of the device is not near your face it will turn back on.

Especially if you are one of those "take the phone from your ear and place it in front of your mouth to talk" type of people. I hate it when I see people do that!
