In that logic, you're still saving >50% and >$100, which is a decent amount of money, and considering the fact that there have been a ton of people complaining that they pay $30/mo for service and whine that the phone costs $150 more, what do you think most people here would rather do? Pay $250 or $120? Also, using that logic, you'd have to have your phone for 12-18mo before it wouldn't pay you to have the TEP as the ebay phones would be less by then. What was posted above about having insurance for approx. a year on the device is probably the best option as that is probably the most likely timeframe where it would break that you'd want it replaced. Start to get longer than that, and new devices come out and you may be better off upgrading, or you could then get a used one for much cheaper as people sell them to upgrade.

That's how I think, but since my 1 year warranty on my TP1 is almost up, I put ESRP on my line, especially since the refurbed TP1s suck.

If you're going to keep a phone more than a year, and you're a careful person, just put ESRP before the standard warranty expires.
