TP2 battery draining & overheating, before dying :(

Hi,

I have had a TP2 for several years, working fine.
Until couple of weeks ago, with no reason or event, the battery suddently went very hot, the TP2 would reboot on its own, the battery drained in 10s of minutes, then died.

I could not recharge the battery (orange led blinking during recharge), so bought a new one (HTC build).

I soft, then hard reset my TP2 - same symptoms.
I changed the battery to the new one - same.
I reflashed the ROM with latest ROM release (March 2010, 2.07.406.1) - same.
I did all above with no microSD card in - same.
I looked for parasite application running in the background (using SK tools), but found none.

I reviewed the forum & found no solution to this issue for TP2.
It seems however very close to issue encountered by other users on HD2/Leo. [such as HD2 overheating, not charging and rebooting - temperature monitoring - xda-developers
]HD2 overheating, not charging and rebooting - temperature monitoring - xda-developers
This would point to hardware problem - which is strange with a device I have had for years with no issue.

So symptoms with my TP2/Rhodium are :
. I can load my battery (to 100%);
. the battery will get very hot;
. the battery drains quickly (such as 100% to 50% in 20 mins).

Has anybody encountered similar issues ?
Any idea/suggestion on how to solve it ?

Thanks !!

maybe check the battery-phone connection pins... could be short circuiting, the arc would create the heat :S not sure if this works same as electrical wiring :S

unfortunately, I checked the battery & connection pins which show no short-circuit. Thanks, Eyeb, though.

Re: TP2 battery draining & overheating, before dying :(

Well i would try another battery since they arent too expensive . Also try a standalone charger , the ports on our phones are horrible . ive replaced too many to count . Take it to sprint or whoever you have to help diagnose it . it almost sounds to me as if the phone itself is short circuting . Has the moisture sensor been tripped ?

again my personal next step would be the standalone charger option . then pop the battery into the phone with a full charge and see what happens . (BTW buy a new battery for the standalone charger , this will help eliminate the battery being a problem) it wouldnt surprise me if the charging port is shorted somewhere .

If the issue is coming up with different batteries then it most def is a hardware issue. You can try to get it replaced or you can take the chance to upgrade it to a better phone.

Re: TP2 battery draining & overheating, before dying :(

thanks elesbb, eric.

The external charger is not an option : when i put a full-loaded battery in my phone, it heats up and drains it in less than 30 mins

So, sounds like i'm stuck with a hardware problem

Has anybody any experience solving this ? ( such as what i've seen for an HD2/Leo in HD2 overheating, not charging and rebooting - temperature monitoring - xda-developers)

if not, last chance will be HTC's aftersale... (but my device is too old to be covered by a warranty (

how did you charge said battery? You say you put a full-loaded battery into phone and it heats up and drains it in less than 30 mins . well how did you charge the battery ? what im saying is you cant use your phone to charge the battery . for all you know the phones charging port could by frying your battery . thus use an external charger and then place the battery into your phone .

Re: TP2 battery draining & overheating, before dying :(

The orange blinking light is an overheating warning, it will not charge during this time. I want you to take a fan and aim it at the phone or if you don't have a fan leave it on a metal surface. Goal here is to prevent it from overheating and see how the symptoms are.

Also do you use wifi? Overheating tends to happen when you have large energy drain + charging at same time.

Does it overheat when its not plugged in?

Mine used to do the same thing. They replaced it. You can try a different charger, if not you'll have to replace it.
