DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>)) updated startmenu remover cabs
** Read this thread first, then the updated one here: Dream Phone II
DREAM PHONE: Wouldn't it be nice if you could own a magic phone that does all this with 1-3 keystokes?!!! 1. Win 7 (SPB xda mskip theme square blue panels like on TV), 2. HTC Sense with Cookie 2, 3. iPhone (IPT @ xda(iPhone Today)) 4. SPB (smooth/fast/no lockups with contact & task switcher carousel.. amazing selectable graphics) 5. Titanium (Winkey, settings, home, items, Windows default) 6. TouchXperiance: http://wmphones.co.uk/touchxperience...mobile-phones/ 7. Android 2.2 Froyo (cat 6 SD card install, see "simple guide" sticky in my sig below...) 8. Home Networking internet & hardware Wifi hotspot. (see below toward the end of this post) 9. Switches between ATT, Tmobile, Sprint, etc.. (works on both CDMA & GSM) all in the USA (see CMONEX security/radio unlocker sticky) (My TP2 DOES!!! READ ON!!) Mini guide to a smoking fast amazing 'all phones' in one TP2 & free home networking: Always start with the best Energy ROM cooked to perfection (I use the Cookie 2 29007 ROM, stable & fast... pick your flavor (any 29xxx ROM)) (actually any ROM will work :>)) 1. Flashed with page pool zero,(Windows managed & not recommended without Start Menu & Sense replacements in place .., super fast but will use more RAM up front & give back when needed, for best results should have over 100 MB of free RAM to start..) & as soon as ROM came up installed Panel Start Menu Replacement (in Energy ROM settings) & got another 25MB RAM (main thing here is that it removes the Windows start menu RAM hog) 2, Install "WinStart" cab from XDA & it'll replace Panel from step 1 (Win/start), flippen too much better than any other start menu/Win screen & uses almost no RAM. 3. Install IPT (iPhone Today) cab AND SPB, went into settings, home (top right arrows to "item") & unchecked sense, checked IPT.. (or simply enable startup on IPT install) Why? 4. A single button push on either sense replacement screen flips to the best of both worlds (Windows & iPhone) & still gets 100MB of RAM free. 5. One single button push also gets Sense (with Cookie 2 but it eats too much RAM so I don't use it much) as well as SPB, IPT... 6. Push droid soft key & get Android 2.2 Froyo Get at least 50 MB extra RAM 118MB free before loading SPB: Dump Sense & Windows Start menu. How? You MUST either use Energy Start Menu replacement switch in settings (an Energy ROM exclusive) OR Arto Start Menu Remover (search @ XDA) AND a Sense/Home/Today replacement (use SPB, SPB Win7 theme, IPT, Easy Today, Titanium..) 100 Megs of free RAM running at 787.2 MHZ OC'd with msm7kcpuspeed & setclockspeed 01d. Config'd SPB same as my cookie (but it's gives 20 MB more RAM, is tons smoother & NEVER locks imho). Works for me, maybe not for you, but you should see people eyes light up when flashing between home/today/sense replacements (items 1-5 above) with a single button push!! HOME NETWORK Disclaimer: The home networking part assumes you have "Phone As Modem" on your data plan. (roughly a $15 add on to older Sprint plans with a certain data level (other carriers may vary.. tons of variance in plans, will not get into the details here). This may violate the contract agreement with your carrier, check it out first, some people do it anyway. Some don't even have Phone as Modem as part of their package & simply use HTC Wifi Router. Hooked up a Cisco wifi router off the Ethernet port on PC. On the same PC, plugged a $9 Tenda wifi N 150 ad-hoc capable thumb drive, clicked "share" on the wifi adapter (ICS on Win 7), turned on HTC wifi router & entire house is wifi. (me: have 2 phones, 1500 shared Sprint min, unlimited data on both now $58 total including insurance) The Cisco wifi router gets it's internet connection via ethernet from the shared wifi thumb drive (2 NICs on same computer) which is located within 3 feet of the best possible phone/data reception in my house tested using field trial (search ppcgeeks for fieldtrial.zip, DL & unzip) & getting -50dbm!! Avg DL = 3 Mb/s (for reference.. a T1=1.54 Mb/s). To share your wifi, use "ICS" by going into properties on your wifi adapter, click the sharing tab & check "Allow other users to connect through this computers internet connection." If you have other devices (Xbox, internet TV, Sling Box) that require a Enet connection, simply run a Cat 5e cable (standard RJ45) from the back of your wifi router which typically gives you a few ethernet switch ports. "Why use a Cisco (Linksys or other) wifi router at all? After all, the TP2 with HTC's WiFi Router can do multiple connections (PC's, laptops, etc.. at the same time) stealth anyway right?!" Answer: *edit* 1. SECURITY: WPA TKIP/AES (WEP joke), NAT (network addr translation), MAC masking, MAC restriction lists, Use any IP range, etc.. etc.. 2. Ethernet connections, 3. Less load on TP2 CPU, seems much faster & more capable streaming multiple laptops/PC's with the hardware wifi router, than having the TP2 manage multiple connections, DHCP, etc.. 4. RANGE & SIGNAL STRENGTH.., try getting decent reception from your laptop to the TP2 on a different level of your house let alone streaming something in the next room... "Well why not just carry your TP2 in your shirt pocket it's always close, all you have to do it keep it close to your laptop." Answer: Yea, but what about the poor cell reception you get in your basement? OR, what about the other 6 devices you have wifi throughout the house, going to carry those around also? Using Field Trial, find the best signal strength in your house & keep your phone there. Hook up your hardware wifi router close & you'll get good reception even in the basement! hehe.. may never buy a new phone... See my signature links (howto & android) for more info on the details... for a few of you this is not much new except maybe the phyical wifi router hookup... just thought I'd put it all together for some of the others.. :>)) NON-Energy ROM's use these new cabs which combine the startmenu remover with restore X & start icon. All in one. The original startmenu remover left you without a start & X button, these work. Thanks to monfro for cab'ing them all together. #30390 Arto Startmenu Remover wm6.5.x StartX.cab Arto Startmenu Remover wm6.5 StartX.cab |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
cool shit man...
Im the same way... I can load all my OS' very quickly.. Android, Win95, WIN7(not WP7) via WAD2.. I guess i dont have a good shortcut to Titanium set up though.. As sweet as we make them, Load times make us look like fools.... people dont seem to understand what were REALLY doing, so its funny to non-geeks... for Me, if i wanted to show off everything my phone could do just going from all my winMO options>WIN95>Android would show alot of loading... it would look functional to people... yet its highly functional.. ya know.. anyways, good little guide for people to get some things going they probably didnt knwo could be so easy.. kudos! |

*edit* To be honest, OCT OCing is faster to droid than setcpuspeed with msm7kcpuspeed as you don't have to reboot... but it seems a little too flaky to me jumping up & down speeds all the time.. that's why I was searching for someone to write a icon to a link that would auto reboot & replace the startup file w/o the OC & put haret at the end right after a "Sure you want Android" Y/N pause... |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
Great write man!!!! Def. the wifi router side thats pretty slick! But i thought IPT had a different name!! LOL

never thought about using my phone for internet. maybe i can drop crime warner.

For launching xandroid... I modified a personal mscr script: 1. to launch wimospeed with the command line parameter "0" to guarantee stock speed for haret without needing to reboot 2. create a startup.txt file I need given what I launched wimospeed during the original boot, with the proper acpuclock setting. So if I know a solid oc speed with wimospeed, it hopefully will translate well in xandroid without having to manually touch the startup.txt file each time. 3. launch haret Hmm hopefully I did not diverge too much from the original discussions lol. Sorry if I did... |

Example (Winstart AND IPT/Easy/Titanium/SPB (free to try for 30 days or so) *edit* OK re. post below.. at least with startmenu replacement (QM = Quickmenu used in place of Windows startmenu) You have to either use arto startmenu remover OR burn an Energy ROM to dump the Windows startmenu.. (actually some reg edits, but not getting into that..) |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
I was running 0 pp with sense and qm with alot of luck!!

It is possible that there was a flaw in my evaluation as I only spent a couple of minutes on it. I did not measure the memory being used by the application, but rather the free memory on my phone. Here are the stats that I had for Boot / After Regular Use

Anyway here's how I check memory stuff if it helps out anyone in the future... Just go into Windows taskmanager, processes & look at usage. Depending on your ROM you may have to assign a key to it with Rhodium Keyboard Config cab (search for that term to find it). OR, I use wktask which shows tiny icons of running tasks in the upper left of my taskbar, clicking on them brings them to the front/pulls up the task, so I run both & if I need to view while it's running, just click over to taskmanager background task, OR back to the homescreen & start taskmanager with the other as a background running task... In this case, 15KB...it actually shows 128kb (kilo bits), then divide by 8 to get bytes (big B) (8 bits in a Byte)... Arkswitch alone uses around 2MB if I remember right.. (another one I dump), that's 15 times as much, you still have that running in your startup? :>)) I use battclock from xda & config with 4 tiny monitors up in the clock area, one being free RAM by whole numbers. When I hit the winkey/start hardkey to pull up Winstart it never changes, while trying on other programs always does. But, one might debate that is because the program is "stay resident in memory"... lol remember that term?... But that's exactly what windows taskmanager, processes will show you.. Hope that helps. |

Just the same, it has been rock solid for me. I will try the task manager you mentioned and try not to get offended at the eduction provided about bits and bytes... :) Thanks |

re. bits/bytes: not offense intented... NEVER, after all you are the registry & cab master! "if it helps out anyone in the future", was put in purposely to direct the response for others not as a response to you (otherwise I would have left it out)... Also, I find most people explain things but leave out key details on many of the small items that really make the difference to many people, especially acronyms! I like to over explain, but that sometimes makes it wordy.. (like this response):>)) I'll bet 1/2 of those reading this don't / didn't know the diff between B & b! BTW: Think I'll stick with winstart beta 2, RC3 still has the timebomb in it set for 10 days... |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
Hey tera im a long time follower of ur advice. Just wanted to tell you my reults with a set pp. Using dynamic I usuall have 120 megs free with ipt. I can tell you with a pp of 10 I actuall have more free ram naturally. I think it has to do with the cpu constantly having to monitor ram usage and som programs naturally using more ram than others. Also while the pp is supposed to be used by the os I think the cprog, device.exe, and gwes, filesys may all use that reserved pp ram. Try it out some time and tell me what you think.

I've flashed everything from zero to 34, by two's different ROM's even a few odd numbers along the way. Just recommended yesterday in some thread to a guy running out of memory in Opera to flash pp 10-12 for starters. The lower you go the more RAM you'll have on start & the more sluggish the OS will be, screen changes, Sense slider, etc.. you're giving the OS less RAM to work with... But, more will be available to the programs... like Opera. I agree with you i.e. the OS being some of the very processes your mentioned. And, I believe those progs will actually give up some of it when needed if RAM is running low. BUT, what I found in my testing (may be diff for others)... was that unless you had a lot of RAM to start, the OS would bottom out & die, not returning any when needed. If I started around 60 for example with pp zero, and used a few progs, google maps, several opera tabs... it litterally wouldn't release the RAM again after dropping below 15MB lets say, and would get so low it would lock my TP2 up completely, recoverable only on a reboot. With a Startmenu replacement, starting @ around 85 MB lets say, not only does the OS (menu's, graphics, screen changes, etc..) smoke, it never bottoms out!! Starting with even more has given better results. One for you... burn 007 @ 8 run for a couple days, then burn it @ 32... see for yourself, I'd like to hear your results! I ran 32 for a while but really started to run out of RAM for program use fast, but that was before running start & sense replacements (getting 120 MB of RAM after dumping Arkswitch). Zero definintally uses more up front, makes the OS, menu's, etc REAL snappy... Zero is managed by Windows & usually MS blows RAM management.. but with 120 to start, I've still got more than enough to deal with. Had 2 programs running & wifi router still had 67 MB free! Many moons ago all our problems for servers & server farm issues were solved with one simple phrase... more RAM. Priority 1: ~25MB start menu replacement 2: dump sense & cookie Now we have over 115 to work with even with some cabs loaded.. wowsers.. A couple times in the Energy thread I burned the same ROM over & over starting around pp12 I think, going to 24ish.. I list the RAM each time. Maybe next ROM for the heck of it I'll burn a 2, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 & check how much RAM after each... would really be interested in how much with a pp of 4 lets say!! I'll bet around 134MB with our setup dumping start & sense!!! Seems distant to me now, but if I remember right it was a 1 to 1 ratio... (drop 10 gain 10) |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
Hey Tera, Mine, Energy, or Sharkie's (what I revolve thru).. I usually compromise on ppl of 6 w/o co0kie and have had no problems. +1 on Arkswitch since I never use it. I also use HTCRIE to remove it; as well as, any other bloat not applicable when flashing other ROMs ie ringers, alarms, language, wallpapers, programs, avatars, "classicbluetsk" etc. Any thoughts on this as I am not an expert on this as much as I am doors and windows.

...and these are only my thoughts... best to try it all & see what u like!! If u multi task tons, run multiple tabs in opera all the time & dont give a rip about animation, flashy quick menu changes, pretty background, etc.. then pp of 6 may be the best 4 u! Re. HTCRIE, tried it, very nice, works good i believe energy said it once about the tp2... tons of program space... not much ram... vs another phone, which had the opposite... I believe in KISS (keep it simple st...), so usually concentrait on priorities... removing the entire footprint of a program isnt important to me personally, if the issue isnt program space... more important to stop it from running & using valuable RAM... which seems 2 me is a much much bigger prioity on a TP2. If i ever run low on internal storage, i usually ID programs that run fine from the SD card & keep them their from ROM 2 ROM.Simply copy the .lnk files i keep in a lnk backup dir on SD to windows\start menu\programs, instead of HTCRIE... but hey, thats what i do... doesnt make it right or best for u! My top 3 priorities on a tp2: RAM, RAM, RAM :)) Replace start men (25MB), sense (25MB) (some claim even higher, results vary.. of course depending on what u replace them with!) lol Now #3 RAM saver in MY opinion.. is page pool... drop it 10, get 10 more... but now that you have another 50, do you need that extra 10??? Especially if it costs u something? (flashy menu speed, animation, background changes, etc.. (stuff the OS RAM helps). i cant answer that 4 u... if so, pp of 6 would probably start u out over 130MB!! wow * to anyone reading this... these are just thoughts & lots of trails & testing, not right or wrong... if your tp2 runs great on a stock ROM & u have no issues & are happy, dont do any of this.. just enjoy what u have :))!!! -post via TP2 |
Re: DREAM PHONE - Mini guide :>))
I've run OCT 1.5v (Ninja Duck's repack) for a while now and it works great for me, but I haven't tried running android.
I set my steps to "0" that way the max speed is nothing less than the max I set it at (748mhz). I kept reading of people that where having problems with programs because OCT would drop the Mhz lower than what the program needed and it would lock up or crash. Setting the steps to 0 makes the phone work just like it did before, just a higher max CPU speed. I think that the additional settings were put in for the other "less powerful" phones that program was written for. |

Is that post boot time memory free gap between winstart rc3 vs manila/panel still about 15MB after the additional testing? Was not sure if I missed something in the subsequent posts. Have you (or teradog) had a chance to see what rc4 does to those memory numbers? I have not tried winstart since I do not want to mess around with that whole beta expire date kills the app thing. Guess call me lazy lol. |

Don't forget to uncheck Sense! And unless I really read it all wrong, it appears you are mixing up 2 different things! Startmenu replacements (quickmenu & panel from above same sentence) & home/today/manila/sense replacements (manila). However, having said that.... you could use NOTHING at all for the today screen, just a background pic & use quickmenu (a NRG ROM startmenu replacement named compact startmenu)... I've written volumes on replacing the startmenu & home screen. In fact the startmenu replacements in the energy ROM today were very possibly a result of several posts & my discussions with NRG.(#25326), ... and then the next ROM series included a another brilliant NRG move... a Start menu layout switch where you could choose your own.. his, quickmenu & a couple of others..! re. RC... I didn't even know there was a timebomb. Rumor was for a while NRG was helping her & we were going to see it in the startmenu layout switch choice..., I tried one RC & it was bad, so I went back to beta 2 & I'm 100% sure of the memory finding, both in total, in processes or other... almost none in beta 2. *edit* To put this into perspective (lest the thread be killed discussing revision numbers... :>)) ... you could use all 4 of the start menu choices & all of them totaled wouldn't come close to the 25 MB the Windows startmenu uses. Point being? Use a startmenu replacement if you're having an issue with RAM & low memory errors. If not, Don't worry... be happy! :>)) |

I have to say that I tried WinStart4&5 and both gave me problems. I could not "refresh" it after I rearranged some shortcuts into folders. This problem persisted regardless of uninstalls and install of other versions. I was given quik support, that the settings were actually in the registry. So I deleted and when it rebuild, it was ruined with missing icon pics. So after a hard reset, I realized wasn't worth keeping and there was no excuse for having not noticed this issue. But the developer said final version will have a check to see if any ".lnk" changed. I have grown to really like "MMAppLauncher". It does not need extra cab files, (like others) to disable the startmenu. It looks better and more polished than the others. You can even move links and replace icons in this app. I think it's the best, but that beta2 app would be my second choice. The two others I will post are/look less polished, and require a "disable startmenu" cab. I will post also. Quote:
for a few seconds, when tapping middle area of the bar where no quiikmenu and no startmenu exists, as it is replaced. Without an app that cover the middel of the taskbar, your unit will freeze for a few seconds, I posted this, but it was never corrected or adressed(common in Energy thread issues take long before correction). Probably forgotten because most users use 6.5.x, so theres no topbar, thus not enough complaints. Quote:
