NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
I found a thread on xda with a link to a promotion in Dubai giving these games away for free. The thread is HERE and thanks to salman22 for pointing it out. The direct download link works fine and people have reported that these games/promotion are legit (though the US may not be their intended target audience ).

Re: NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
It seems like a legitimate company but the author info within the cab files wasn't populated (seems to have been created in WinCE CAB Manager w/o EA's company name injected). It doesn't seem to create any registry entries either? Just files and shortcuts... maybe I'm being overly skeptical, but I'd really rather not have my phone send mass texts to the Middle East while I'm sleeping lol

Downloaded all of them, I can confirm NFS works. Takes quite a bit to load up but it looks great and runs pretty flawless so far.

Re: NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
Interesting. The thread on XDA has a link to download the entire game set in a single zip file, but if you go to the actual website in the post and try to download the games there you are asked to input the IMEI # of your phone. Not sure why they'd want that info or what nefarious things they could do with it, but sure doesn't sound legit for anyone but the carrier to be asking for it. And since Dubai is beyond mthe protections of US copyright law, I seriously doubt that this "promotion" is legit.

Re: NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
I would not trust ANYTHING out of Dubai.
The short story is that place was supposed to be the ultimate paradise, like Vegas on super steroids (but resorts not casinos). They brought all these people in to work and build this place and it all fell through when the economy hit the downturn. In that country, if you default on your debt, you are arrested. So there are a LOT of indentured servants and financial slaves. long story, cray shit http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion...i-1664368.html |

Re: NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
I suppose you could be worried about it if you want to, but the OP at xda is in Dubai. SIT Distribution is a real company (simple google search) and according to salman22 they are "the official distributors for HTC in Dubai, UAE." Another poster from Dubai had also heard of the promotion.
I'd bet the IMEI is to ensure that only residents of Dubai and whatever carrier(s) are running this promotion are able to download the games. Though, it seems they may need to work on their website design since the link you get after putting in your IMEI apparently works for anyone. Edit - if you're still worried, you can read post MykeChester's post here. He has lots of posts on xda and is in Dubai. Posting over 800 posts over the course of a year and a half seems a little far fetched for someone trying to make your phone send text messages on its own... Re: NFS:Shift, Monopoly, Sims 3, Tetris Giveaway
Given that someone can do this:
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/cell-...g-devices.html I'm hesitant to give my IMEI# to anyone but AT$T. WHo knows what else they can do with it. I see no valid reason for anyone but the carrier or the manufacturer to need to know this info. |
