New TP2 phone question

So, a few days ago, I posted something about my phone no longer letting me talk when on a call. I took it to a Sprint repair store, and they didn't even look at it. They just said it was probably a bad microphone, would I like to order a replacement or another phone. I am like, "Another phone please."

They had to order it, and I just assumed it would be a replacement (refurb) phone. When I got it today, I found out it is a Brand New Phone! =D>

When they were activating it, the rep. pulled out a white card (where the SIM is supposed to be) from my old phone and put it in my new phone. (I am pretty sure...) I asked him if it was a SIM card, and he said it is, but not the kind that lets you use it for storing information. He called it something along the lines of International Card or something. He basically said that if I went to Europe, this phone would still work.

He activated it, and then told me I could go on my merry way. I did, and turned on the phone as I left. It did the whole preparing for first use thing, then the stylus thing, then entered Sense UI. A few moments later, it did something, and said something like "changing to Global..." something. Does that mean I have a CDMA phone or a GSM phone? I thought all Sprint phones were CDMA...

So any way to check what the heck phone I have and what "mode" or whatever it is in...I am still going to try and unlock the friggin' thing...

The Touch Pro 2 is a combination of GSM/CDMA or better known as a Global Phone. The idea is that it is compatible on many networks. Therefore you should be able to go to Europe and buy a pre-paid Sim card and pop it in and start dialing.

To use the TP2 in USA or on the CDMA Sprint network you have to set (should) the phone into CDMA mode. Go to Settings-> Personal-> Phone... on the bottom of Phone menu there is a network tab, click that. -> Under mode of operation, choose CDMA only.

Yes that was a SIM card that the rep put into your phone, you see the Touch Pro 2 is a World Phone. It has both CDMA and GSM capability, but the GSM portion is locked, IN the US, when you're outside of the country you can purchase a prepaid SIM card in another country and put it in your TP2 and it would work. So basically what that Sprint rep put in your phone was a Sprint International SIM card, so if you leave the country your Sprint phone will still work, with the same number I believe, but the rates are very high.

You can unlock the GSM portion of this phone so that you could use another carriers SIM card in this phone. But if you just plan on using it on Sprint you don't need to do this. I hope this answers your question.

On VZW, you don't have to switch from anything to CDMA, it just works. It's not the same on Sprint?

it should be the same on big red too. their tp2 has global mode. what the global mode does is that it just automatically will search for both signals and pick up which ever network signal is available. the only caveat to it is that it will never pick up a GSM network in the US since the sim device is defaulted to be locked for US GSM use (unless you sim unlock). so all it really does is put in towards the battery drain. so it's just better to put your phone setting in CDMA instead of global.

and to OP...the store rep was incorrect in telling you that you can't store information on the sprint sim card. as far as you being the end user is concerned, even if you are on a GSM network, there isn't really much information you can store in your sim card in the first place. the only thing the user can store on the sim card are contacts. but idid notice something about the sprint sim card that's different from the way i was able to store contacts with my at&t sim (was on that network a couple of years ago). with the sprint sim, if you have multiple number for a single contact and you copy that contact to the sim, it only copies it with one number. when i was using at&t, it would copy all contact info.

in my experience it does save all of the numbers but each number is a different contact with the same name...
