volume control hard buttons when in off mode

Maybe I am spoiled by my old Treo Pro, but when I have my screen off and listening to music, I was able to adjust the volume of the speaker with the hard volume buttons by just pressing them. On the TP2, you need to turn on the display by hitting the power button and then you can use the volume buttons, any way to change this like the Treo Pro?
