TP2 Tethering to Mac via PdaNet BT??
I just returned from a trip abroad where I bought an unlimited data plan via my (Sprint) HTC TP2's ability to use a foreign sim card. My goal was to use the TP2 as a modem for my MacBook Pro. I simply went to Bluetooth/Networking Manager/Share Internet Connection, and my TP2 discovered my Mac. It then went through a "checking services" search, and quickly found that the local carrier's sim card could support my tethering, and a very fast connection was immediately established. I was amazed how fast the BT shared internet connection performed--a speed of 1000 kbps on the McAfee Speedometer test! But now that I'm back in the U.S., I don't know how to accomplish anything comparable. I use Sprint, and they no longer provide the $15/month phone-as-a-modem addition to my plan, since they'd apparently rather sell new stand-alone cards. I've used PdaNet in the past with a PC, and so thought I'd try this. By USB I can get it to connect to a Parallels 5-hosted Windows XP session on my Mac, but I can't get the Mac side of the computer connected to the internet. So, I thought I'd try to get PdaNet working with the Mac directly via BT--and in fact, a Sprint tech told me that this is now actually OK with Sprint for people like myself who have an unlimited data plan, if we can get it working without their support.
I have downloaded first PDANet 1.8, then 2.0, and in each case the "Enable Bluetooth DUN" is grayed out and text below it reads, "(Bluetooth DUN not supported)" on my TP2. Additionally, the pull-down window in PdaNet 2.0 says, "No connection over Wifi", and I've been unsuccessful trying to set up a WiFi connection between my TP2 and the Mac, even though I think I've followed all the recommended steps. Can anyone help me to get tethering working between my TP2 and Mac, with or without the PdaNet? I'm using 6.1, and could upgrade to 6.5 if there were reason to think this would solve the problem. I really like PdaNet when it works, but am open to other suggestions as well.
