Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I think it's a cool app in concept an maybe with practice but unless you know the letter layout well it is far slower that just tapping the virtual keys or the hardware KB. I don't like the word complete/suggest stuff turned on at all as it just annoys me. I have to say I'm with the OP on this one, maybe not that swype sucks but it's not my thing.

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
Oh sorry to be on topic in my previous post so here's to the off topic. Texting like doing anything else that takes your eyes off the road can be fatal...it's just common sense. So now the government decided most people lack that common sense and needed to make laws to entice people to be smarter under penalty of take your money before you kill someone.
No sugar coating from me, most drivers on the road are morons. For example, the masses after some 70 plus years of driving together seem to not know how to merge with a simple one for one because timid drivers are so slow and unsure about taking their place in traffic that they lag while the guy in the merge lane is not courteous to move or make space. Blinkers blinkers blinkers...1/2" with your pinky finger...it's not that hard, really. Don't hang in the hammer lane to prove your speed is the best. Move over if you can so people can pass you the right way. Don't ride ass because your not as fast as you think on the brakes not to mention tires only stick so much to stop you and you can't steer when your front tires are locked up in a skid. Don't forget what a mirror is for...no, not for hair and makeup. Try adjusting it so you see the cars beside and behind you instead of just your car because you should know where yours is. Oh and the Toyota people that can call everyone in their friends and family plan while they are careening out of control...turn the key off or push the button off or put the car in N for Neutral. How hard is that? One day returning home from work my throttle return spring on my car broke which left the engine pegged at wide open throttle (WOT) so I assessed the situation in about a second. A phone call was not even in my mind when it happened. I quickly pressed the clutch in to stop going faster which is the same as shifting to neutral. This left me rolling with a screaming motor bouncing off the rev limiter so I turned it off with the key and coasted over and over till I got home. It was surprising but not that hard to figure out, just common sense. I say this because our driver training and testing is a joke for one and secondly, most people only drive for personal transportation. They have no clue or just don't care about the concepts of car control/physics for any skill progression which is actually useful and can be pretty fun. AutoX anyone? (You will have fun learning) So most are just point A to point B drivers with everything else in life on their mind but the fact they are operating a big machine with free reign to point it anywhere they want at whatever speed they choose. Hey if you can text without ever looking at your screen then you have skills but I doubt it. And yes I have texted in the car but far apart from traffic because when I have ever tried around traffic I caught myself gettin sloppy with my steering so I gave up before I had to pay for it one way or another. Sorry for the off topic but figured everyone's doin it right? Again, +1 to OP on Swype. |

I personally like the good old letter recognizer for entering appointments etc.
Unfortunately the NRG rom I've been running doesn't have it built in anymore and does have Swype though. I've really liked using it for one handed operations to input text on a task. Just open tasks, use the quick menu to put in your task and save it for categorization & planning later. I don't find that you can really type with it the amount of WPM they advertise though. Handy but sometimes not practical. |

And for me, I don't live in a big city. I live in a city of 40k people, but spend a lot of time driving between here and northern towns, which is a lot of country land - which is when I usually end up texting because of the longer drive. As a side note, It wasn't directed towards you about the conditions I text under. |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
swype sucks slideIT is 1000% better. You can slideit and drive with a windshield mount and still keep your eye on the road. although since it has become illegal to do so in my state. I only text while stopped.
Its pure BS. Some people are supertaskers and do it smartly. For instance glance quick at phone and back at road while its in a windshield mount = little to no distraction. There is more distraction looking down to pick up your drink, or looking back at your kid, or some hot chick etc. Anything can happen quickly and chances are if it does, it wouldn't matter much if you were texting or not. Too bad there are too many idiots out there who can't understand that some people (regardless if they think its just opinion or ego or something) can supertask. Some people do have very quick minds and reactions. Just because your slow doesn't mean that everyone else is. I also understand that this is only about 5% of the population or less. but we should get a pass dammit. No tickets or accidents besides some slow poe running a red light and tbone'n me and being rear ended by some other jackass my entire life. Not even close with it being my fault, and I've also avoided a few idiots who would have hit me. I am 39 and frequently texted prior to the law being passed. Maybe if people taught their kids how to follow traffic laws. Pay attention. Do things within their own ability and not run out into the road. We all would be better off. Why don't we make that a law? And if your kid is a jackass. You should go to prison. Yes pedestrians have rules too that aren't followed at times. Some pedestrians think they can jump out in traffic and everyone should slam on the breaks. Bicyclists can be arrogant and foolhardy, and injury lifetime job (income) people are always jumping out between cars. also there have been studies on states who passed these laws years ago and nothing changed. The same accidents happened. Reason? the same idiots are doing the same stupid things. Other people know better. Oh yeah.. and to all you lame parents who blame everything else for their stupid kids problems. I learned how to supertask from being a video game fiend my entire life. It also helps me think quick too. So much for them rotting your brain and turning you into a homicidal maniac! |
