Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I never could understand it. I have seen rave reviews over this Swype app. Saying that it makes typing out words and sentences much more easily and quickly. Previous users of touchscreen only phones with no qwerty keyboards are the ones to most praise this app, since they are accustomed to having to use the stylus to type. Getting my TP2 in Oct, this is my first PPC phone. Knowing that I have an available keyboard, I make use of quite often. But sometimes I just don't feel like sliding it out (that and to try and prevent premature wear on the slider) and use the stylus to tap out a message. It's no big deal for me to use the stylus. When I tried Swype, I worked with it for about 2 hours. I cannot see what the rabe is all about. If you ask me, it's complicated and takes way too friggin long to draw a line through the letters. Many times when it pops up words, it gets them wrong, and even when it does pop the right word, it seems like it makes it take longer to have to click on that word. I can tap tap tap tap out words a hell of a lot more quickly than trying to draw a path through them. There were other issues I had with it, but that was a few months ago so I dont recall what they were. It just takes up too much time to use this app... To put it in short, I deleted this app shortly after installing it.
It sucks IMO..... What is your take on it? |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
My take on it is: I have never used it im fine using soft keyboard without need for a stylus, but saying it sucks isn't right im sure since somany people rave about is its most likely that it isn't for you.Don't Put an app down so harshly that other people love which proves that it had alot of hard work put into it.

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
i think its okay. it is kinda too slow for me though. i think in theory, its awesome. it probably rocks on a 4.3 inch screen though!

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I Do not think you gave it a fair shake. And I know that you didnt even bother trying to adjust the SETTINGS!!!! lmao.
You can set how LONG That screen with the suggested words will stay popped up if at all you can also set it to not pop up if you can spell. You can also set it to be a bit more SLOPPY try to figure out what your trying to type even though your getting it wrong I find it to be EXTREMELY accurate and FAST. The WORLDS text SPEED record was just set using Swype so I guess maybe you that some things are ok for some it works great for them and sometimes no so for others. Swype 3.9 is even better in my opinion and I have a cab that has it working on any rom with out an issue its lovely. I would give it another shot and adjust some of the settings to suit you better |

i liked it. but only when i was driving or layin on my couch n 2 lazy to use 2 hands. it didnt have some choice words i use in my everyday talk which sucked & im not sure if had the ability to learn such words but i never really took time like that anyway 2 explore it. i was using it with no side effects i knew of but read many many threads on how it does more harm to our phones then we think. i got rid of it shortly b4 i upgraded to 6.5 because certain cabs costed my phone to go haywire & never installed it after cuz i DONT LIKE hard resets & kept my phone "light" so to speak. but its a hell of an idea on how it works & i may 1 day install it again, well if i downgrade to 6.1 bcuz memory is a thing of the past since 6.5 & i have no idea how much that would require. ehh |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
ohh. it'll learn those werds. my friend sat here one night and taught it a bunch of stupid things i cant say here. we had a 20 miniute long conversation that night about wether ass hair was one word or two!

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I've tried it twice & didn't like it either. It seemed more complicated & slow than useful, IMO.
|
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
There is a video tut that you can watch when you first install it or if you select the I down in the bottom left corner...lol
To teach words is very easy all you do is TAP The word out then you hit SPACE now its saved in the dictionary. if you wish to erase it you highlite the word and delete it that easy. You can also get it to punctuate and put a space by just swyping to the mark you wish say a ? goto it then to space bar and whala@!!!!!! |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
i use the hardware keyboard when i can but when i just want a quick text or reply, swype is better than anything else out there. what bugs me is that it still inserts the auto-space when i'm typing a URL... i'd turn it off but then typing non-URLs would be a hassle.

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I polled up an email I sent someone back in December (when I tried Swype). I recall some more of what bugged me about it.
Yes .. it was adding words which bugged me. I found myself constantly having to add words, even some normal everyday ones. Otherwise, if it's not in the word list, it won't show up when d--r--a--w--i--n--g through your letters. And that just slowed me down. It just seems rather tedious to use. And another thing is, I also couldn't slash, highlight and delete a word the old way. Having o go to the other screen to fetch a character all the time.. yikes. When I say it sucks, that is my opinion. I am in no way bashing on other people who use it. If someone likes using it, then that is their choice, good for them, but not me. |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
Sometimes my finger gets in the way but so far the app is cool.
|
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
Oh yeah, and I could not get the gestures bs to work correctly. That's another thing I forgot about. Just like the built-in gesture function, I had big trouble getting it to work. I swyped in that direction or that pattern and it did not type out that character.

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
back when i had my omnia i loved using the swype keyboard i was able to add lots of swears and other words i used in my everyday conversation lol and it made responding to texts fast and easy with only using one hand. that being said i never use it on my TP2 becuase it has a hardware keyboard now and i dont have much need or use for it but it was deffinatley a good app in my opinion

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
never used it, and don't cook into my ROM because of all the problems people talk about on here.
|
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I personally felt that it was a great app. After i got used to it I was typing messages very quick. the ony reason I dont use it anymore is that it didnt work when i hit "new text message". When i typed in the first 2 or 3 letters of name it didnt access my address book. I actually had to type in the phone number... Who knows the phone numbers in their contact list lol... If anyone knows a fix for this i would gladly go back to swype :)

It's Awesome! One of the first apps I install after a Rom flash( used to be touchpal,) in fact I just got a new TP2 from assurion yesterday and had to go searching for the swype .cab.
You don't have to click on the word after you spell it, just spell the next word and it automatically puts a space. I don't see how having to spell a word once is a big problem, since it remembers it after the first time. I haven't even opened the keyboard on the new TP2 since I got it yesterday. I showed my brother how to install the Android version for his Hero and he Can't believe how great it works. I challenged a friend who swears by hard keyboards and he said there is no way I can type faster than him using swype on my Touch Pro2. Guess what, I did! To each his own I guess. Edit: I hadn't heard of the Record, but your right, google "Swype Set New Guinness World Record " here's the version I put on my TP2 Yesterday that is working flawlessly. |

I have swype in my system (it came in my NRG ROM). I tried it out for a week or so & never really liked it at all. I use TouchPal 3.5 for my on-screen KB & like it better in every way. I can type insanely fast using TouchPal & their T+ technology. ~John |

How does your finger EVER NOT get in the way (or are you guys using the stylus with swype??). Between my finger always blocking the view of the KB & trying to remember where all the keys are, it just seemed terribly inefficient.... Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can't imagine what it would be. If anyone has any suggestions I can still try it again, it is part of my ROM so it's still sitting there unused..... ~John |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
anyone have a link to the latest version?

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
If Touch Pal took the time to make a silly commercial then im sure this could beat swipe..

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I love Swype. Granted, I also love my full qwerty, but there's times where I don't have two hands available and really need to get a message out quickly. It does take some practice, and getting used to, but in my opinion Swype is very intuitive and convenient. Fiddle w/ the settings and take time to watch the tutorials and it'll have you going in no time ^_^

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
it just takes longer...unless u have a big screen!
but its awesome the way it works :) |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
when i used it, it was ok until i noticed it killed my email tabs accounts and jacked up my start bar!!
|
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I tried it. It was ok. I know it would take som getting used too. But sadly, it took my other virtual keyboards away. If I choose any WM virtual KB, it only lets me use Phonepad or swype as an option.
I uninstalled and had same issues. I finally hard reset and haven't touched swype since |

I can't agree with bacon and think swype rocks. In fact im using it right now to type this response. I never use the hardware keyboard and can't wait to ditch this phone for the evo. |

So what exactly is the point of this thread anyway? Is anyone learning anything? Or is one guy just bashing a piece of new software?? I'm sure we can find a bunch of people to say that sliced bread sucks too... because they can't regulate the thickness! If you don't like it, don't use it! Why come and bash it? I personally think it's fantastic, and the first SIP that would make me consider going to a device without a keyboard. |

I'm NOT bashing Swype nor am I bashing the users who like it. I created this thread out of curiosity. I wanted to know why so many seemed to like using this in place of normal tapping or even the hardware KB. I wanted user opinions. See, I found I had a hard time with this app so I didn't understand what all the rave was about. IMO, I didn't like it. Coming from a user who recently had a Motorola Q9M, I am used to typing on a hardware KB. And even with the touchscreen, it just seemed a lot easier to tap the letters than to draw through them. Also, I did have some of the issues mentioned in earlier posts. For instance, having to backspace to make the contacts name pop up. I already have issues with incorrect contact names popping up, and that just made it worse. Having the other built-in keyboards vanishing, until I uninstalled Swype. And what was this other typing interface app that some of you mention? I would be interested in trying it, just for the heck of it. I'm willing to try anything once. And.... KABLAM! to the user who said they use this while driving. That's a BIG NONO! I'm not about to change the thread subject but, DON'T EVER do that.. or even think about texting or using apps while driving. A friend of mine got in a wreck 2 months ago just because some asshat was typing a txt message on his phone and rear ended him. Now back to Swype. Thank you all for your opinions and useful feedback. This was what I was looking for in the first place. No flames needed. |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I don't care for it. I still prefer to use proper spelling , grammar and punctuation. A lost art I know. It seems harder to do with this type of app. Good for quick, one-handed responses perhaps. (just my $.02)

Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I'm on the swype bandwagon...and have been since it was ripped out from the omnia(?) I think that's where the first cab came from...Have KNOWN about swype-type apps for onscrn keyboard since the 1st gen iPhone was jailbroken...(there was an app for that)
I love it, there's a time and a place for all the multitude input methods that's available to us TouchPro2 users. I love the onscreen for inputting info to setup email acc'ts, online logins, etc. Composing email is definitely a hardware keyboard job. Little texts to friends and family...HELLO SWYPE. I don't abbreviate my texts, and I don't believe the app does either. Once you have had practice, and the app "learns" your tendencies...its almost magic. Opinions are like "you-know-whats" and everyone has one...so this is mine. By the way, the backspace to get your contact to auto-populate might be an install thing. I do have the latest vers which have the bigger buttons...its cooked in to the ROM that I'm using...and the contacts populate normally. edit: Not Omnia...think it was the Imagio... also to the OP...its good to ask for opinions...because you might learn a bit more about the app...that you might want to give it another go. Read that this is your first PPC...keep asking questions...and your knowledge base will grow...and instead of giving up entirely on an app...you might work to get it working for you. |

I had already installed and customized my Start menu. That's a big thing for me is the lack of customization on the Start menu. I might have the time & patience to start over from scratch, hard reset and then use the clean up cab 1st lol. Dealing with my phone is one thing, but hers (she is technology illiterate) takes a lot of my time. especially showing her what files, to use, utilizing task manager etc lol |

Unsurprisingly, there's more delay when you change the setting for sloppier input, but you can actually keep typing even while it's figuring a word out and it will keep up. And worst case, it'll get something wrong, and all you have to do is double-click on it to get a list of potential corrections. |
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I actually find Swype rather convenient when I don't want to bother sliding out the keyboard to type. It's great for one handed replies sometimes, and sometimes the predictive spelling cuts the time where I would try to type on the keyboard. However, I find it a bit annoying that after a period, when I start another sentence the word is not spaced so it'd look like 'blah.blah' instead of 'blah. Blah'. Anyway to fix that? Other than that, I like it and I think it's a nice alternative to the onscreen keyboard (which I find for my taste sluggy and annoying at times).

I friggin love it, it's extremely accurate for me it's right 95% of the time
|
Re: Why do people like using Swype? It seems more complicated than useful.
I don't even use the keyboard anymore. I like swype, works great, can send a text in no time flat and don't have to abbreviate anything. :headbang:
