The radio that I use is the US Cellular USC_2.18WV (I am in NY as well so as far as NY I liked this one but you can try others if you want)

make sure to unlock your phone for flashing before installing the radio.

how about something more basic, like the sprint cleanup cab in the stickies section. then see if your phone performs better before you go custom.
