Why not just connect your phone to your computer through the USB port (set it to Disk Drive mode) and turn on wifi router... That way you're charging and using internet at the same time!

This is exactly what I do. Pretty much a break even. It won't 'charge' the battery, but it won't 'drain' either.

I may not be able to assist you 100% with the USB tethering on a mac, but if you are running Snow Leopard, you will need to delete a file called CellPhoneHelper.kext.... You probably will not find much detail online about it, however I discovered on my own that it is NOT much of a helper.

you will find it located at

/system/library/extensions/CellPhoneHelper.kext
