Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
I asked this same question and the overall answer was no you can't use the native SMS. What you can do, is enable Gmail push-email to sync with your email and have GV SMSes forwarded to your email. Then when you get a new SMS from Google Voice, it gets pushed to the native email program. Then you can reply just as you would as a txt and it'll get sent to the person you're replying to as a text.
I used this for the past month while I was in italy to avoid texting charges. I disabled save sent messages and include message in reply to speed up the process and reduce clutter. |

Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
Thanks, isdnmatt!
Yeah, I was afraid of that. That's how I've been accessing GV SMS as well - through email. It works well except for the lack of threading support and its rather cumbersome to send an SMS to someone for the first time. Thanks again |

Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
Yea, I find it cumbersome also to send for the first time. But you CAN add the sending email address to your address book as an email address (I just add "(SMS)" at the end like Gmail does). Then it will come up just like sending a new txt. I also have a bookmark in Opera to GV if I have to do it that way.

Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
Thanks,
Good ideas. As long as I keep my GV contacts up to date, it does work pretty well via Opera. Thanks, man! And hopefully //somebody// will figure out a way to hack the native SMS handler. That would be awesome! |

Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
I use Easy SMS to send texts via Google Voice (at least the 1st one). Very light and good enough for this purpose!

Re: Change SMS gateway to use Google Voice
I think where the problem you are going to run into is that gv is just a call router, so if someone sends you an sms to gv it routes it to your cell number, just as voice calls are forwarded, if you got rid of your carrier sms, gv would have no way of knowing how to get the sms to you, and sms for the most part, uses the carrier voice network, on the other hand, mms uses the data/internet connection, so if gv would get mms figured out then you could bypass your carrier, mms is basically an email sent to your phone
