I just changed that setting through opera:config, shut down opera and then soft resetted (turned off by depressing power on/off button), and it still reverted to 2 tabs.

I'm not so sure that I mind, though. Back on 6.1 when I changed the setting by going into the opera directory in WM and making the change there, it seems that things may have gotten a little sluggish. Seems that I read on one of these threads that even though task manager may not show opera open, that its actually on in the background. Speculating here, Verizon changing opera so you can't up the tabs count may have been to avoid having resources tied up. Any thoughts? I really don't think the 2 tab thing would have been locked just for the heck of it.

To add more tabs to Opera Browser use Total Commander:

With TotalCommander, simply highlight the file, click on File, then Edit. This will open the opera.ini file in a built-in editor.

When you use Resco Explorer and locate the opera.ini file, tap the file and you'll be asked what you want to open it with...a list will appear. Unfortunately Pocket Word (pword) is not in that list so you'll then click on the Browse button. That will present a list of all applications in the Windows folder. Scroll down until you find "pword" and select it. That will launch Pocket Word and will open your opera.ini file within it so you can edit it.

Once you have the opera.ini file open, scroll down to the [User Prefs] section and locate the "Maximum Allowed Tabs=2". Then change it to what ever number you prefer. Then click on File | Save, then File | Exit. You will need to soft reset for the change to take effect.

This worked for me. Download Total Commander.

Yes, sure did.

Its a mystery

What seems kind of strange(in a good way) is that with 6.5, it seems that Opera rewrites over the existing tab more often than with 6.1. With 6.1, it seems that it kept wanting to start a new tab which caused the max tab message to pop up a lot.

@op, it does work when u do it through opera:config. the problem is if u immediately soft reset after saving changes, the changes dont take effect. what u need to do is change it in config and wait like 10 mins before u reset. i had this exact same problem last nite, but it worked when i waited a while then reset the fone.

i now have max tabs set to 5. im on stock sprint rom. hope that helps u =)

Re: max number of opera tabs on stock rom??

NOTHING i'm doing is allowing me to get past the 2 tab minimum. i save it, wait, turn off then on, soft reset....blah blah blah. i'm still stuck at 2 tabs max. it keeps reverting back to 2 tabs even though it shows that it saved...

i might add that i do have opera 10 installed as well. is this conflicting with my default opera perhaps?
