Re: PTT on TP2?

AT&T has the best 3G if you have good coverage. I just read this engadet report:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/e...er-in-america/

Tha thas AT&T's 3G as the best overall in their multi city test. I can also vouch that it is the best here in my neck of the woods too. If it was as cheap as Sprint, I would still be with them.

Verizon is basically the same as Sprint but way more expensive and with better customer service.

I read that article before and in about 1-2 months, it's not going to make too much of a difference. Sprints rolling out the 4G already, but only in smaller test markets and only for USB adapters. T-Mobile will be rolling out 3G+ which rivals 4G, but doesn't have the data restrictions as every other provider.

My entire family has AT&T except myself and my fiance, we have Verizon. Yes, I believe the commercials, I've seen it first hand

I live less than 10 minutes south of the Twin Cities in a densely populated suburban area and they often have dropped calls or the inability to connect to the web with their phones, and not just in our area but in multiple suburbs as well as downtown.

Once 4G gets rolled out, then that will definitely change things. Sprint, for example, is using WiMax, which nobody else uses. Verizon and AT&T will be using LTE. I don't think T-Mobile has a 4G strategy yet- they are still trying to get 3G rolled out.

So Sprint will likely be using a technology that nobody else uses, while AT&T and Verizon use the worldwide standard. AT&T and Verizon will therefore have plenty of devices being made for them, while Sprint only gets devices they have specially made.

Anyway, this is too far out to really say for certain, but that is what it's looking like right now.

Also, as far as Sprint rolling out 4G- my city is not even on the list of future cities yet. No telling when or if I will ever even get Sprint 4G. It's entirely possible that I get AT&T or Verizon 4G before I get Sprint 4G in my area. And even if Sprint happens to get 4G in my area first, again, there are no devices. There are a few data cards that SPrint gets especially made for them, but I'm more concerned with smartphones than data cards. With all of Europe and the rest of the world using LTE, you can bet AT&T and Verizon will be getting some awesome devices as they rollout their new networks.

What's misleading a lot of people is statements going around about when this stuff is coming. Your information about Spring and the WiMax, needing specialty-made stuff sounds like an awful future, reminiscent of HD DVDs. Sprint looks to be the first on the 4G market next year, with plans to release in large metro areas, but Verizon expects continental roll-out in 2014-2015 and only 20-30 markets in 2010. True 4G coverage is not that close.

Which as a T-Mobile customer doesn't worry me too much. I was surprised to hear T-Mobile said they weren't in development for 4G, but they have been very hush-hush about everything. Rumors for them to buy out Sprint make such a statement understandable. Plus, I think T-Mobile is ready to "flip a switch" to turn on 3G+ in every 3G market they have. They just met their goal to cover 200 pops in 4 months.

Well Verizon may be late to the party, or they may not- we don't know for sure yet. But what we do know is the rest of the world has already commited to LTE as their 4G technology. So Sprint getting WiFi rolled out before Verizon rolls out LTE, will be basically the same as Sprint rolling out EVDO before AT&T and Verizon had nationwide 3G. Sprint beat AT&T to the punch, but AT&T still got all the devices. Look for that to happen again, only much worse this time around. I mean, at least Verizon and some Canadian carriers (and various carriers around the world) were using EVDO with Sprint. None of them have committed to WiMax though, so Sprint will be hard pressed to find device support.
