"X" button to close in WM6.5.3?

I thought everybody used Duttys Task Manager.

It puts the task manager back in the upper right corner and from there you can set it to either End programs by tapping "X: or End programs by tapping and holding "X". It just works.

Another way besides using the onscreen X or quickmenu is to install Keyboard Config and configure the hardware back button. You can assign it to press and hold to close the current running program.

In the latest energy release (mar15) go to start menu>tools>task manager. From there hit menu>options>tabs and buttons. On the bottom of the screen there will be a check box thats says "switch minimize and exit buttons". After doing this programs have seemed to close instead of minimize for me.
