Firewall?.... (usb WAN port?)

I've not even used the internet with the phone yet....

but I'm really used to having a hardware firewall.

Anyone know of any hardware firewalls with a USB wan port that would support these phones as modems?

I suppose a good stand-by would be a mini-ITX machine running linux & some hackery to turn that into a router/firewall box. But that would probably cost $200+++.

Anyone here doing anything like this already?

Hmmmm interesting idea, But as far as I've seen product wise You would most likely have to do the LanBox idea you already posted, As I can't say I've seen any USB style routers / firewall systems available for sale, (at least for sale for a reasonable price...)

I've seen an older brand from a few years back that had a USB port for WAN... wonder if that would work.

Also wonder if there are any USB hacks for the Linksys WRT54G/S series routers that would not only allow USB for increased memory to the device - but allow the USB port to be used as a WAN source. Hmmm.

That would be a fairly inexpensive way to go if so.

Same goes for any of the linux based hackable-firmware routers I suppose... maybe some already have USB inputs on them?

Interestingly enough, the phone has a sort of built in firewall (NAT) when using Internet Connection Sharing.

You get a 192.168.1.x IP (so, possibly using NAT), even cooler is that it supports UPnP port forwarding (at least, the applications I were using were able to open ports).

(Of course it could be just forwarding all ports to the computer and just replying OK to any UPnP request).

USBmodem supports Linux, so you could probably use a Linksys (or similar) router with USB port and third party firmware (like OpenWRT or HyperWRT, etc.).

OpenWRT sure supports quite a bit more than the linksys wrt54g/s these days!

This really opens things up for a nice hardware firewall for the ppc-6800

(or any usb based cell modem for that matter)

So I would rather go with ASUS WL-500g Premium due to the extra USB2.0 port.... but the question is, do we (as phone-modem users) need bood_wait, or jtag, or any of the things that the Linksys has?

That extra usb port could come in handy for additional space via flash memory stick.

No, it doesn't matter. When running OpenWRT they are almost identicial. I think the Linksys has been discontinued though. The WL-500g has a removable antenna too, so that is a plus (the Linksys one is not removable).
