Read through the stickies here regarding unlocking and upgrading before trying anything else. I think your making this harder than it is. Also go to Microsoft and get Activsync 4.5 in order to set up a relationship between the PC and mobile device. Backup personal information before flashing a new ROM. There are several ways to do this.

Oh and yeah, the flower thing is a good idea.
