You have to manually edit the registry.

There was also a .cab that applied the regedit that was uninstallable and reversible, but I can't find it.

Threaded sms really is ugly and not as smooth as the old way. sometimes u cant even see what u r typing. it is squeezed in at the very bottom of the screen. i think they (microsoft) can do a whole lot better

Yea, that can get pretty annoying, but thankfully temporarily fixable by activating the onscreen keyboard and closing it again. Still wish it didn't happen though.
