Like many of us I was so pissed when Sprint cut off our Tethering with the 6700. I used to use Bluetooth all the time with my Powerbook G4 while on the road. When I saw your post, I followed the directions, and voila!! I could tether again! But since that first test I've been unable to connect my laptop with this method (the 6700 connects just fine). All of my tweaks are the same (registry settigns and Mobile IP preferred), but I just can't connect!!! I just get the message that says "Modem error ocurred, please verify your settings" Any ideas? I've searched all over the place.

Are you doing this?

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.p...5&postcount=35

Those of you running Sprint ROMs should remove the following registry value:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\InternetSharing]
"Extension"="rilphone.dll"

Usual caveats about editing the registry apply here--don't do this unless you know how.

Yep do the reg edit like Honan said, then follow these steps after you Change (delete) registry entry for rilphone.dll

1. Plug usb in computer only at first (we don't want Mogul to connect with Activsync)
2. Open Internet sharing, leave settings USB and PCS then hit connect
3. Now Plug USB into 6800, wait a few seconds for it to set up connection on computer.

That's it, remember when your done hit disconnect on your 6800 FIRST no matter what.

Tehering question

If any of you can answer this, please do so:

I just want to know if any of you who are using this pdanet are still having to pay for your $15 or $20 data plans with your carrier?

You do not have to have a data plan, but without a data plan you will have to pay a fee per KB of data transfered (I don't know the current rate, but I think it's somewhere around $0.03 per KB on Sprint).

The advantage of the Interner Sharing hack / PDAnet / USBModem / etc programs is that you do not have to pay for a PAM (Phone as Modem) plan on top of the data plan.

AncientPC 11-16-2007 04:02 AM

I tried tethering just for kicks today without editting the registry or anything. Anyway, I could no longer make data connections (phone / text were fine) and when I called Sprint CS they made me do a hard reset back to factory defaults.

I now realized it was my attempt at tethering this afternoon that messed things up. Oh well, I'm on the Alltell ROM now instead of 6.9x.

adrian2pm 11-17-2007 11:59 PM

can you use this free tethering hack on TOUCH?

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

I see nowhere under connections where it says "phone as modem." Am I missing something?

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

If you're using any of the newer 6.1 custom roms based from no2chem or DCD then I believe the phone as modem connection profile has been removed. Otherwise, you should be able to go into connections from System, the Advanced tab, and then Edit under dial-up connections. There you should see the two connections Sprint PCS and Phone As Modem.

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

Also, as the OP, I can confirm that, through using this hack, I have never been charged from Sprint for any data usage other than the 10 dollar data plan. (and I've downloaded movies and many more gigs of data, as well as getting rid of my high speed internet connection at home. I solely use my phone as my net connection) =)

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

So, upgrading to the new ROM(3.35), you can't find the registry keys needed. They're not in there. They changed it. Anyone else get this?

EDIT: Found it, but had to search the registry for it. They made it all hidden, but could be uncovered by doing a search in the registry with SKTools. Yatzee!

eXplicit 03-12-2008 03:12 PM

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

Oh yeah, this new ROM totally removed all the stuff we need to tether for free... "Phone as a modem" is not listed anymore in connection settings. When I try and connect, I get error 67. Well, time to look for a work around.

could you please clarify? when you found the hidden reg values and changed them, did phone as modem work and were you pulling faster speeds?

No, actually it was throwing back errors. I got the 67 error. I'm still trying to work it out.

Im ONNNNNN. I was plugging in my USB to my phone before I connected. I pushed connect first and I am in. PAM too. Thank you. This is on that connect too.

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

Ok now it kicks me off after about a minute. I immediately do a speed test at speedtest.net and i get to about 93% and it kicks off. I tried both Sprint and PAM to connect. Sprint was giving me over 2400kbps

What ah HoOT...I've been making love to my M oGu L every single day since I first met her about two weeks ago. We got into a bit of scuffle late last nite, as she didn't want to teether for me. Little, did I know then, that all I needed to do was read through this entire POST and low and behold, arrrr she blows....

I'm estatic, I remember first teether about 3 yrs ago on my A900. Damn time warner and it's high bills forced me too. It was a blast! No online gaming but who cares...it's free.

Thanks everyone for the info!!!!

You'll need to use a registry editing tool like Total Commander or RegEdit. Do a quick search of the forums and you'll find links to download them. ;)

Well, the key that PDANet gives you in an email is specific to both your Phone's ESN and email, so if you lose your Mogul or other Windows-Based device (which means a different ESN), you're going to have to pay another $34, but I think that since you have your old keycode, that PDANet will give you a $5 discount ($29) as a 'returning customer'

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

I was able to take a sprint mogul and hook it up to qpst, when looking at the nais on there there are 2 one for normal one for tethered,, I just copied the normal nai user info and pasted it to the tethered one exited rebooted and voila tetherabillity...

maybe just a fluke? not sure but it sure does make since

Re: Free Tethering? I think so.

Once im in the connection settings. Do I go to sprint and manage an existing connection or my Work Network to add a new modem connection for the phone as modem settings? When im creating the new connection it lists Bluetooth, Cellular line, Gneric IrDA, and Hayes Compatible on COM1. Do I need to worry about any of this or just change the registries and follow the instructions on the first page with opening ie and launching internet sharing afterwards as phone as modem?

Thanks for all your help.
