If you remove the OS, you'll see all the RAM.
It's being nice. It's not showing you 20MB that it uses for other things. Yes, that's right, it needs a full 40MB to boot up and paint the today screen. You at least get to keep the other 26mb (well, 22 after you add anything to the today screen, and 18MB once it fills all the buffers it uses in the OS.) You can't have it back. It's not missing. It's just misunderstood.

ah ha! just like how windows lies to you and says you have 950 MB of ram when you really have 1024

Yeah, the neuROM3 6152-pre3 ROM has a Kernel switcher built in that lets you switch between having a camera and not having a camera. With the camera turned off and a 6MB pagepool I was seeing about 32MB of RAM free on boot. There are still a few issues with the ROM though, so read up on it before you use it.
