Re: Is the GPS Supposed to work overseas no matter what? with or without service?

Ur just experiencing low satelite signals. The GPS chip on ur phone is not as strong as in the GPS systems. U don't have assistance from cell tower as well because ur in another country. Roaming is for calls.

What kind of phone/what carrier are you using because arparent's answer is right (from what I know) for CDMA carriers.

I stand partially corrected. It is capable of locks on its own, but it takes much longer without assistance. Many programs timeout before a lock is established.

Re: Is the GPS Supposed to work overseas no matter what? with or without service?

have you done that reg tweak that is located at

HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/supl agps

and make sure the first 3 settings are 1, 1, 4

this allows you to be able to turn the phone radio/go into flight mode and still get a gps lock...

i thought gps was gps and it did not matter where you were at, as long as you have the available maps.

Re: Is the GPS Supposed to work overseas no matter what? with or without service?

Just a crazy thought, this may work from what I'm reading. If we can somehow get packedephemeris.ee from someone elses /windows folder within the area we're traveling when using our aGPS, it should work. It sounds like a major PIA but I'm sure it would work. I think so because it downloads the satellites ephemeris data and uses that to "assist" the GPS. Once that's so, the aGPS chip will work in "stand-alone" mode, hence being able to have the radio off and still properly operate. Aside from that, I'm all out of ideas cuz I'd like to know too!

Well, if that's the case then someone should set up an international GPS hint page where you can download the hint for your region. Or, better yet, write an app which asks you where you are, such as England, and generates a valid hint automatically.

also, you might have to turn off the aGPS setting using advanced config. this might help, im not 100% sure tho
