As the user, you're absolutely right, you leave the username and password fields blank. But that doesn't mean that Sprint doesn't authenticate your data connection, its just done in the background. If you had control over it, you could ensure that you ALWAYS logged in with the NAI for phobe browsing, even when you tethered.
