I believe the newer ROMS added this feature. Before the GPS update, this was true and you had to make a reg edit for this to work. Now, it isn't needed.

how would one make it work on the older ROMs? I have the 5060 ROM with the 3.35 radio.

Another vote for HTC AudioManager. Its the lightest and the one thats easiest to control just with the D-Pad and soft keys.
