Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

1 Attachment(s)
*****SPRINT ONLY DO NOT RUN ON ANOTHER CARRIER*****

updated to include PRI from beta rom customizations....

PRI update ripped from beta rom customizations - enables access to the sprint GPS assistance server for nearly instant GPS locks.

If you have not run beta rom customizations follow the instructions below.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Unzip and install the cab file below on your device

2) Navigate to \windows and run PPST.exe and follow the prompts

You only have to do this once and it permanently updates the PRI (not the same as PRL) for your device enabling access to the sprint GPS assistance server.

Note that this may also update your PRL to the latest available at the time so if you have a newer one you put on yourself you may want to update it again. If you don't know what this means it probably gave you a newer one than you had on there anyways so don't worry about it.

I still see people complaining about poor lock times/etc using sprint and there is no reason for that - your gps can be AMAZING!

Note: I still have GPS mode set to 2 (some claim setting to 4 actually leads to worse results with this fix - shrug - doesn't seem to make a big difference for me). I do not run nor recommend QuickGPS/etc as these seem to be complete placebo.

Enjoy! 5 second locks every time, no kidding (faster outdoors even). I'm not sure why this isn't in the GPS stickies and definitely recommend that it be added as it is AMAZING the lock times and extreme number of satellites you can get from this.

For those on other carriers, this fix might help. It doesn't seem to have improved things much for me on Verizon, but your mileage may vary.

Thanks Holo! Good find. I seem to see an amazing diff. in how fast Trakpal finds GPS. it use to take almost a full minute now it just jumps right on.

Stupid question, but for those of us on the stock Sprint 3.35 ROM, this isn't necessary right?

It IS still necessary, this is from the 3.49 beta rom customizations - try it and prepare to be amazed... reflashing or hard resetting on 3.35 and letting the customizations run actually UNDOES this...

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I want to try this but ever since the last offical ROM came out, I have been getting 8-12 sats in view and 6-10 in use depending on my location in around 5 seconds. And I dont know about HTC QuickGPS but I think it has worked for me quite well. Can someone tell me why it really doesnt work?

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

This is marked as the same version that is in the leaked sprint rom is there something that was modified in this one.

If by official you mean the "official" sprint 3.49 beta rom and you let customizations run then you already have this PRI update...

To answer your other question, QuickGPS came stock on the AT&T tilt and I believe another device or two and it creates a file with the current satellite locations - there has been debate over whether or not the titan will read this file and from what I understand the consensus is that no it does not. If you don't run QuickGPS I would imagine you would not see a difference as it is the 3.49 beta rom PRI update that is giving you these lock times. A few others including one of my friends have reported getting really fast lock times with the 3.35 rom already but this does not seem to include the majority of users.

No, as I said this is ripped straight from the 3.49 beta rom... If you let customizations run on that rom then you already have it but many people have not installed this rom or skipped customizations when they flashed it...

Quick question.... would you know if this is compatible for the Vogue?

I'm pretty sure this is titan specific, but I could be wrong.... I wouldn't recommend using it unless someone could confirm for sure that it is compatible...

Thank you, sir! I didn't actually care for the GPS in my mogul since it took so long to lock on to the satellites. It took less than 10 sec. to lock on sitting in my room, whereas before it took at least 5 mins.

Understood. I wanted to see if you knew before I took the jump. I'll just let the powers that be on this site to test and approve! lol

Ditto on that one, I was carrying around my bluetooth gps since I could hardly ever get the titan to lock before this! I would have to hold it to the car window to keep a constant gps lock while driving around... Now this bad boy locks indoors even in rather large buildings almost instantly with 8-9 satellites... It is definitely now far superior to my bluetooth gps...

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I'm amazed at how sensitive the GPS is in my mogul. In my office, I have a brick wall, and a concrete ceiling to another floor. I fire up the gps and in 3-5 seconds it is locked to 5 satellites. My old phone, the m610, it would never see gps in my office... Not to mention it would loose the GPS signal when you really needed it.

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I ran into a problem when installing the CAB file. It loads some Custom PPST file in apps, right(at least it says you can uninstall it)?

When I did this, I lost my Sprint PCS connection. Do I need to have a custom rom loaded for this CAB to work? I've had my phone for a little over a week, has GPS and it works. i Just thought this was a simple install to enhance the GPS.

If there's something else needed, please let me know. Otherwise I'm staying clear, it took me 15 minutes to find out it was after loading this CAB I was losing my Sprint connection. Couldn't make calls, couldn't get text messages out. Tried having text messages sent to me, no go. Back up now though.

It shuts down the radio and will require a reboot... Install the cab and run PPST.exe in the windows directory and it should shut down the radio and force you to reboot and you should be fine...

You need to run PPST from the file explorer in the windows directory...

No custom rom is needed but you will need a GPS enabled ROM/radio (if your GPS works already you have this already).

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Alright, giving it another go. I didn't get any prompts or anything after running the PPST.exe file. Does it just...'blip' and it's done? I'm assuming it did its thing because I lost the connection again.

I'm going to restart it and see what happens.

Thanks for the quick response.

it should pop up a screen and say that it is updating.... you clicked ppst from the windows directory? you might have to turn on view all files in file explorer...

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

^^^ it should say it's going to reset your phone, then you click ok

This works really well for me, it gave me a lock inside my apartment in 6 seconds flat. Usually it takes at least 45 seconds to get a fix.

tarrant64 06-18-2008 12:58 AM

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Yup I sure did click the one in the windows directory.

Still no prompt though. Looks like it's working. At least for Live Search anyways, just takes 4-5 seconds for GPS now. Google Maps still takes a minute or more.

view all files is on.

It's the file dated 4/7/2008 right? It does turn off radio, but just doesn't prompt. Did a soft reset and looks to be working.

Something I need to be concerned about?

dunno maybe it did it on its own - that date is correct....

do ##778# from the dialer hit view and make sure your PRI version says 2.03_003.... All apps should have similar times getting GPS fixes too - probably just something weird at the moment...

Yup, that's what it says.

Thanks

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I did the update from PRI version 2.00_003 to the new PRI version 2.03_003

I dont notice the difference... is just as fast as before to get a lock (8 to 10 secs) and with the same 8 to 9 sats

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Can someone help? I tried this on a Alltel HTC PPC6800 with the latest stock ROM, the one that was released just a few weeks ago. I really didn't seem to help the GPS any and now my roaming indicator is on all the time. I tried dialing *228 and updating my roaming and then activating, but it didn't seem to help. I uninstalled the PPST update and tried the *228 thing again, but still no luck. Any ideas?

you should have read the very first line in this post...
alltel ≠ sprint

I did read, but thought that I read that someone else had tried it on another network and it worked. Hopefully, one day, I'll get to the point where I don't make mistakes too!!

Enough said about that. Does anyone have any idea about undoing the mess that I have caused?

this cab made my gps less accurate and slower to lock on....... oh well.

using original sprint 3.49 test rom.

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Im using Sprint Navigation (powered by TeleNAv) and it didnt seem to speed things up when locking into my current location (NOTE: Im in a building, possible problem!). Also worth noting is when running the PST file located in the Windows folder, it didnt give a popup, but does stop all comm's. So a soft reset is needed. This is on my mogul with Official Sprint 3.35 ROM.

Faster GPS locks would have been nice though, but for me, so far its the same. Will Post again when Im outside.

LATE,
TWIN

bigredgonzo:

you might want to try 1) hard reset. if for some odd reason that doesnt work then, 2) flash to a newer rom (not sure which one exactly you are using-alltels latest, sprints latest?). and if for some reason neither of these works then good luck, i have no idea...

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Anyone know how this impacts using the GPS when NOT in North America? I tried using my Mogul (using TomTom) while in Europe. While using GPS Viewer would show sats being seen, it wouldn't lock (even after very long times in the open and running overnight while plugged in in my hotel window). I'm guessing that the GPS driver isn't allowing a lock outside NA as a method to speed locks within NA (since it can eliminate a large part of the globe).

Anyone tested theirs recently overseas?

I'm also wondering if the internal GPS will work outside of the US because I will soon be travelling abroad.

Running 3.35 radio with no2chem 5067 (my own custom)...My GPS locks in 12-15 seconds (including initiating a data connection and download maps). Downloaded and installed and haven't seen a difference as of yet...

Look in the Vogue Upgrade forums, this is already discussed over there and there is a PPST file for the Vogue out there already. I ran it weeks ago and GPS is working flawless.

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Hello, I run the stock as shipped 3.35 rom. I never had a problem with the GPS part of the phone but I decided to try this cab to see if there is a differance. I reset my google maps which cleared my cookie's , history, pref's etc... I then ran Google Maps "Use GPS" and I did this 3 times ( resetting Google maps in between tests ) and it took 00:21sec, 00:28sec and 00:24sec with an average of toggling between 4-5 sat's. I then did this update and checked my PRI before and after to make sure I really did the update. I re ran the test 4 times the same way with resetting in between. 00:31sec ( I got worried ), 00:14sec, 00:13sec and finally 00:13sec. with an average of toggling between 2,3 and 4 Sat's (I wonder why less sat's? ) These were done while sitting at my desk inside a office building.

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I'm going to claim complete and utter stupidity here. But, I installed the cab file and WHERE am I supposed to find these "instructions" I'm meant to follow? The only file installed in my \Program Files\Tools directory is cesetup.dll, can't run that, it's a dll.

So, i uninstall and reinstall cab file, no difference.

Perhaps a step-by-step instruction of how to install this file would be helpful, because it's NOT showing up anywhere where PPST.exe can find it when I go to do a PRI update NO .pri files are found.

Yes, viewing all files is checked.
