Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Ok, I've always been hard pressed to use the GPS in my Mogul because it would take a min of 3 minutes of being stationary to get a lock and I've never gotten it to lock in my office. I installed this update and within 6 seconds I had 8 locks while sitting at my desk with GM. This works. THANK YOU!

What program are you using to test you gps connection?
Google Maps?

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Unzip and install the cab file below on your device

2) Navigate to \windows and run PPST.exe and follow the prompts

Notice it says \windows - not \Program Files\Tools

I'm doing exactly this, and when I start EPST not PPST by the way, I enter my code, go to update PRL, and click browse and there is NO PRL file found. Which is why I'm wondering where exactly IS the PRL file? I've looked for it myself and it's nowhere.

So, what exactly am I doing wrong? Running EPST from \Windows does absolutely nothing. Nothing runs at all.

Have you updated your PRL? That may be all it takes to fix it. Several people (myself included) have found that this update wipes out the PRL, requiring an update to fix it. The symptom of a faulty PRL is that the phone will appear to be roaming at all times.

PPST, not EPST! You're updating your PRI NOT your PRL....

This updated your PRI (and probably your PRL as well). What you need to do is either flash to a default alltel rom and let the customizations run (and possibly then run \windows\ppst.exe again), or find a PRI update ripped out of an alltel rom and run this. I had the sprint only in red for a reason ;)

See if that fixes it, you may also need to update your prl if it doesn't do it on it's own from http://www.corolada.com/prl

Let this be a lesson to all non sprint users ;)

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I am running the stock ROM 3.35 from Sprint. GPS for me has always been excellent from the get-go with iGuidance, Astrolauncher, and GPSGate. Lock-on is usually within 15 seconds. I tried this CAB for kicks.

I have not tried it outside yet, but sitting by my apartment window I was able to get 5/12 satellites when before I could usually only get 3/11. Lock-on time is about the same.

For the record, I also didn't get any prompts to restart after running PPST.exe from /windows. It shut off my phone radio and I waited a while, then did a soft reset. ##787# showed the change.

I'm going to do some more testing, but thanks! Seems to be an improvement so far :)

I got really frustrated and reflashed the Alltel 3.35 ROM. Of course, this fixed the problem. Now I'm in the midst of re-installing all my crap. I wish I knew a way to speed that process up. I re-applied the GPS thing with the 4 files and its back up and running fine. I just wish I knew more about the inner workings of this phone, so that I wouldn't be such a noob. I guess I'll get there eventually.

Thanks for the advice,

I definitely didn't, I've only had the phone for a month or so and I wanted to get a feel for what it could do in stock form before applying any homebrew stuff.

It looks like I still got an improvement, but just in case - is this removable?

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

No improvement for me. GPS lock is typically 15-20 seconds either way. Tried both GPSMode 2 & 4 (normally use 2). Running stock 3.35 at the moment.

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

i have noticed that everything is running quicker, as in programs opening and closing when clicked, etc...besides the quicker gps lock.

wow!! even after doing the 1,1,4 registry tweak, acquiring a gps lock in flight mode is way quicker than ever before...
got a lock in 5 seconds in Ostia (no need to prime, there is a gps on and off button within ostia) and 3 seconds in pocket streets ( after priming it with holox's mini gps viewer).

this cab is definetly a keeper

edited to add: thanked

that's fine - some people are reporting that, just wait 30 sec or so and soft reset and it will come back up fine with the update....

Do you know whether this update is uninstallable somehow? Or does it require a hard reset to remove?

im not too sure but i think if you upgrade your radio (only radio) to 3.39 it gets MUCH faster locks for gps. alltels rom and radio was the first i used for gps and i thought it was good cuz it locked on in a few minutes. but with this new radio i get locks within about 5-20 seconds depending on if i have recently locked on in the location before.

this is my experience with the new radio, but i bet others would back it up. btw look into something called UC for autoinstalling all your cabs and stuff, or check out a nuerom

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

*stunned*

Wow... thanks. Seriously. Wow.

So my PRI was 1.4? something in the 1s. Pre-GPS - am running the stock sprint rom (latest) but did not let any customizations run when I installed it. I've *always* had issues with the gps on the mogul... have a newer at&t tilt and it locks very fast, the mogul was always hit or miss.

Put this thing in, and.. er, 7 sats *inside* in about 5 seconds, from a dead cold start with no previous fix at this location in last 12 hours.

Wowsa.

Again, thanks! Gonna get a lot more use out of tomtom now ;)

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

I haven't had a problem with GPS locks since the original leaked 3.16, but I figured I'd give this a shot anyway.

Doesn't appear to be doing anything for me. In my building in downtown Houston I was never able to get a lock before, and I still can't. I've been sitting off the coast of Africa for 10 minutes. Zero satellites (as expected), and apparently no independent aGPS lock either. Maybe aGPS is only currently used to assist the satellite based chip? (edit: that sounds kind of stupid:) I realize it is "assisted GPS," but I was thinking that you should be able to get a lock based on cell towers alone, satellites alone, or a combination of the two.)

I was getting ~10 second locks before trying this, so there isn't a whole lot of room for improvement, but I'll see how quick I get a lock on my way home today.

Is this file worth a shot on a Vogue? I remember seeing some PPST stuff for the Sprint Touch a while back. My wife's Touch is very hit or miss currently.

Is there a way someone could give me a detailed explaination about what I need to do to just upgrade the radio to 3.39? Also, is there any compatability issues between radio version 3.39 and Alltel?

Does this improve GPS performance on no2chem ROMs? Right now I am running 5069-k

schettj 06-20-2008 05:31 PM

Re: Sprint PRI UPDATE - 5 second GPS locks - cab attached

Wow folks, I just have to say.. NIGHT and day performance for me.

I'm on the latest 6.0 Sprint OEM
Check your Start->Settings->System->Device Information
Running radio 3.35.04 (latest Sprint OEM)
Running PRI 2.03_003 (this is what this cab updates TO)

If you're not running that PRI, and you are on Sprint, Install it. If you were already running that, then this cab does nothing (re-installs same pri)
If your PRI rev is lower, then you really should install this cab/update it... If you do install it, make sure you re-enable the agps registry settings, enable the agps service (if you had set them to 0, and disabled that service...)

My gps has never been this stable or fast to lock. I am really, truly stunned.

it requires another install of an older PRI (letting the sprint customizations on 3.35 run would undo this update, or finding an older cab) but other than that it is permanent. I'm not sure why you would want to remove it though, as I haven't seen anyone reporting any kinds of issues with it and it definitely leads to MUCH faster gps lock times (although some people seem to already have these fast lock times, but I have never seen/heard of it making them worse).

Wow. I have tried every GPS related hack / change for my Mogul. Most don't do a thing. This one dropped my lock time to 4 seconds and my average Sat count from 6 to 10. I am very impressed.

Thanks

Running no2chem 5069k and 3.39.10 radio. I did a test before I installed this, and did a test after I installed it, using GPStoday, and noticed absolutely no difference. Same time to lock, same number of satellites.

Right, that would be the expected result if you had already installed this PRI update through/via some other rom flash/hard boot cycle. Which is why I suggested checking what you had installed before installing this cab.

Check your Start->Settings->System->Device Information

All this does is update the PRI to 2.03_003 - depending on what you had before this will make no difference, or a huge difference.

Also, if you've changed the registry to disable agps this cab doesn't re-enable it.

HKLM/Software/HTC/SUPL AGPS/
EnableAGPS 1
EnableGPSSmartMode 1
GPSMode 2 (or 4)

Takes about 15 seconds to get the satellites, and I get about 4 or 5 inside. This is inside my home.
