GPS installation - WHY is it so difficult?

i had to do a hard reset and when i reinstalled google maps its telling me that it needs a data connection which i must have since i can go on line with exporer. anyone have a fix for this. thanks

That's the first step, if you don't have a full copy installed, it's not gonna run, since the kitchen only includes a "primer" for the GPS, not the full install.

The Kitchen only includes Google Maps and Windows Live Search. Which just work, no priming needed.

I've also gotten GPS Today and Garmin XT Mobile to work, without priming. Just installed it and ran it.

yes i have a full version of igudance installed, but it thinks i'm in southern cali but im actually in norcal, SF bayarea

i just reflashed and made sure i had the .net stuff, but i still get the error when i click the iguidance launcher...

uhhh what? i run that program and it doesnt do anything... what kind of settings do i need to change?

what is the version you have, and where is it installed..
it must be on the storage card, and it must be installed via ActiveSync, through your PC.. it's still not super clear to us that you even have this actual program..
the iguidance LAUNCHER program, will NOT launch iguidance. it's just a 'primer' app, to open your gps chip..

I will HAPPILY walk you through each and every step..
you need iGuidance 4.0.. full version.. you need it on your computer. you then need to install it from your computer, via active sync..

can you confirm this is what you have done so far.. this is step 1.. forget about the 'launchers' and gps gate etc... for right now..
first thing is the actual program installation, and it's not real clear that we have that bit ironed out yet........

anticipating your answer of a complete and proper installation of the actual iGuidance program (since you do mention above it thinks your in NoCal)..
Next is 'Holux GPS Viewer', this is the pimer apps that will open your GPS chip..
do you have it installed.. forget the Astro GPS Launcher, or any form of it.. Holux is the easiest and most foolproof.
You can download the holux program right http://www.hevis.com.hk/download/GpsViewer1.5.zip

install that from your PC, through Active Sync, to your device..
then run it.. in the setup screen, change the port to COM4.. then press the 'Open GPS' button.. after a short bit, you will get a lock (the Sat Bars will turn blue)..
THEN, open the iGuidance program.. NOT an iGuidance launcher.. the program iguidance itself..
configure the setting in iGuidance to look for COM4 for it's GPS feed.. you THEN should have your current location displayed on screen.. and iGuidance will be working..

do all this first, to make sure everything to this point is working as it should, THEN we'll talk about GPS Gate, which is what you need for iGuidance to continue to re-map your location when your on the move..

Menu>VirtualComPorts COM2

iGuidance is set to COM2 and 4800 baud

Make sure you run the programs in the right order; start Wififofum, wait until it locks at least 3 satellites; leave it running and start GPSProxy, hit Start and wait until you see GPS data; leave it running and start iGuidance

One of the apparent peculiarities of the internal GPS in the Titan, or at least of the current implementation of it, is that the GPS can be turned on or off through the "master switch" in the Location setting of the Phone app, but the GPS does not actually activate and lock on to satellites unless it receives an Open command that most GPS programs do not issue. Hence, the requirement for a program such as Wififofum, GPS Viewer, HTC GPS Tool, or a similar program to run in the background and issue (and reissue when necessary) the Open command. I have found Wififofum to be the most stable of those and it is free.

See the above for the GPSProxy settings.

ok ok, i might be getting somewhere FINALY. i have i guidance4 installed on my phone as well as the holux prog. i was able to get holox to get a signal and then i ran iguidance and it did in fact know where i was so i think i got that part of it down...

so the nest step is to get gpsgate, or gpsproxy to get i guidance to update correctly?

runs from today screen and primes gps FAST.

Yep.. follow TaylnOne's instructions step by step, in the GPS Titan Faq sticky, and you'll be fine.. You need GPS Gate because it re-routes the internals to Com2, bypassing the Microsoft drivers. it's a bug (or lack of development) in iGuidance.. and you have to do this to get your location to update real time while using iGuidance..

As far as all the other programs - (Garmin etc..) - it's really all personal preference.
Yes, Garmin has it's OWN primer, and you don't have to go through all this crap to get it running..
i used it for about a week.. it worked well.. but i just didn't love it.
then tried iGuidance and i think it is FAR superior.. the voice turn by turn with street names, is just awesome..

iguidance was ok... tomtom worked better IMO.... Garmin worked flawlessly out of the box.. when I used iguidance.. I never got it to speak the street names.. so I ditched it in prefereance to either garmin or tomtom.. (garmin has the awsome find the food feature searchign for restarunants and so on) hopefully with newer renditions of pdagps software they will accually send the proper commands to the gps chip and prime the chip like the garmin does... but... as nickles says.. gps software is really a mater of prefereance.. and what features are important to you.. and what you like... garmin will install only the maps you need.. tomtop needs to have all the maps.. or entire mapsets.... I dont rember if iguidance needed the entire mapset as well or not.. all of tem require hefyt space on your sd card... tomtom needs 1gb... garmin can use as little as 200mb dependant on the maps in stalled (reminicence of mappoppolious) so far.. all have voice directions.. but I havent found one that will speak the street names yet...

I gave up on trying to use the internal GPS with Iguidance. I have Version 4 and did not want to go through all the hoops to get it working so I just bought a Holux BT GPS reciever which is about the size of a small box of matches, paired it up and Iguidance works fine. Yes, its not the perfect solution but I can dock my mogul in its holder on my dash, and sick the reciever in the corner of my dash/windshield and everything works.
Does really good on my motorcycle too. I have a small velcro pad under my fairing that I stick the reciever to and a holder for my mogul.
