Re: Family Locator app?

That Sprite Terminator looks AWESOME! That looks like everything I was looking for, and a few things that I would have been looking for in the future (but didn't know it yet).

My only question on the Sprite, is can you text snother phone number to the phone and have it sent there?

It appears that you set up the phone to text the results to the same phone # every time. So it just waits for a text message, and then it texts back the location to the phone number it was previously set to text them to. But say my phone gets stolen (along with my son's). How would I go about locating it?

It would be cool if I could text something like spritecmd <password> <alternate safe #> gps
or even spritecmd <password> <email address> gps

As is though, that Sprite Terminator appears to be the answer. The ultimate "keep tabs on your kids" utility. The old saying, "Do you know where your kids are?" will never sound the same again.

Re: Family Locator app?

from what i've seen so far all the programs need to be installed on to a wm5/6 phone. but does anyone know of a program where you can get a gps location from another phone with gps capabilities but a non wm5/6 os? maybe something similar with sending a text, but when they text you back you can retrive there location. or even being able to retrive their location while on the phone with them.... ?

Re: Family Locator app?

I consider myself a very furtinate parent without the need of spying. My daughter can always be found at work on the same street corner day and night with her trusty-protective employer Mack daddy.

Good luck spying on the kids, glad my parents were not psycho controll freaks with bugging devices.
Have a look at this http://www.alternet.org/rights/66846/

Re: Family Locator app?

You guys can hate/taunt/whatever all you want. I don't give a damn. I have 2 teenage sons and I WILL play an active role in parenting them.

I am not a stay at home mom. I am a working dad, and my wife works too.

If more parents took a more active role in parenting their children, we'd have a lot less problems in society today. And unfortunately, I'm not rich so my wife and I have to work. Things like this are the only way I can maintain a more active role in parenting them.

So you guys can sit on your high horses all you want. Me, I'll just keep doing whatever I can to do the best job possible parenting my children.

I haven't used this feature yet, but I think it does track live. And I am not sure if this is the best solution for what the OP is looking for. For what it is worth, here is what their website says:

With the Buddy Tracker, you can see the geographic location of the members of the groups you belong to. Similarly, you can share your whereabouts with your friends by selecting the "Send Location" feature on Navizon (only if you want to and whenever you want to).

So whether you want to make sure your daughter gets to school safely or see where you friends are gathering so that you can join them, the Buddy Tracker will be the ideal companion.
On your phone, use your buddy tracker and set your privacy options:
  • See your buddies' location on the map:
When you see the map, hit Menu > Buddies > List ., and then Menu > Show on map, you can also call them or search a particular contact.

NOTE: Check 'Update Live' to update the positions each time Navizon connects to server.
  • Choose the groups you want to see on the Map:
Click on Manage groups, and check the groups you are interested in.
  • Make your location available to your group buddies:
When you see the map, hit Menu > Buddies, and check 'Send Location'
If you are using Navizon with a GPS, you will be able to share your location with your group members' wherever you go. If you don't have a GPS and are using Navizon in Wi-Fi/cellular positioning mode, this feature will work in the areas already covered (see "My coverage" in the user section).

NOTE: You can also find your buddies on the web interface, in the member section, click on Tracker and you will be able to see the position of your friends who made their location available.
No Big Brother here

With Navizon's buddy tracker, only users that are member of your groups can see your location. So you can only be located by the people you want.
And if you don't want anyone to know where you are, you can even turn it off altogether by unchecking "Send location".

Re: Family Locator app?

Also if you have Sprint...you can pay for Family Locator service...but then you are paying every month for as long as you want/need it.

I've only played with Sprite for 2 days. There are a couple options when you install it. Once is to only allow text messages with the spritecmd from paired phones. This means you could make it so your son's phone will only respond to your phone number. The other is to allow none paired phones. This means you can send a text from any phone and it will reply to that number. So if you lose both your phone and your son's phone, you can borrow a friend's phone and text both phones (if both have sprite) and get a text back from each phone with the gps coordinates.

As far as I know, there is no way to have the program send an email. I'm not sure if it would be possible. Sending an email would require a data connection. If it had to dial, it wouldn't stay stealth. You could always ask the Sprite support and see what they have to say though. Perhaps they will look into adding it.

Re: Family Locator app?

Some of these guys obviously haven't raised kids. We installed Verizon Chaperone on our 14 year olds LG env and have caught him in the middle of the night a mile out of the zone he was supposed to be in. You see..he was spending a night at a friends multiple times and it wasn't that we were not doing our job. Sometimes other parents suck and this helps us know where our kids are. Plus, nothing is more fun than frying the little ****s noodle when we catch him..
