try a soft rest after you uninstall dialer....stick stylus in small hole next to sd card slot and insert.

i had this problem...turns out there are two $15 vision plans. one that stays on 1x and the other that does evdo...sound stupid but it fixed my problem

I didn't know that it mattered. There are two plans, Vision Entertainment and Data. I've always used the Data so I never noticed the difference. I was just going to recommend that you update your PRL but that would be a noob answer which is what I am. Glad to hear that you were able to fix your problem.
