it seems that once i activate the gps port by running gpstest, it consumes about 100mA more power.

Are the battery hacks implemented in the 3.16 ROM? I have a settings ROM that adds them for me, so I didn't check to see if they were in this ROM.

If not, do the battery registry hacks, turn off the IR beaming, lower your screen brightness and set your screen not to stay on too long. Those tips should help you minimize the battery drain.

Of course GPS and WiFi will suck down the battery life as others here have mentioned.

EDIT: If you like your phone's like Sir-mix-alot likes his women, you can get an extended battery (Mogul got Back).

3200 mAh - $64.95 plus shipping

I will throw this out there, and it is just my opinion from running tests the past few days:

The current implementation of GPS on this ROM is not ready for prime-time. Case in point is the OP's original issue with perceived battery drain. Even though HTC/Sprint included X-button as part of this ROM build, in fact does NOT operate as intended with all applications. That would explain why the OP had battery drain when in fact he believed he had shut down whatever app that was utilizing the internal GPS.

I myself have experienced "lockups"... where the entire unit won't do a thing, including go into standby by pushing the side power button. Eventually it would unfreeze and I've determined it was because there was GPS functionality going on in the background and it couldn't find/lock onto the sats, even though I thought I had shutdown all other apps. That is a flaw, because under a multitasking OS, one thread shouldn't be allowed to dominate the entire OS... seems like they have to refine the GPS intermediate driver so it doesn't lock the phone up when GPS isn't happy.

As others have pointed out here, having an easy "one-click" way to toggle GPS on and off, plus with an obvious visual icon as to its state, would seem to be an optimal solution.

Just some thoughts.

Through yesterday I was having great battery life and today I was having a horrible time with it. Well I did a hard reset yesterday so I didn't install the customizations and forgot to turn off beam and remove the two entries from the startup. Added the battery customizations and now I'm good.

I'd be curious to know if that is startup power, ie, the GPS is searching and hasn't done a sat lock yet, or what the power draw is when the GPS has sat lock and is happy. I'll try to measure it on the way home tonight.

you can actually completely shut it down, try to hold the power button for more than 5 secs ...

OK, "put the phone on standby," then. Yes, I'm absolutely certain I know the differences among all the buttons and switches.

Ok, I just ran the first test. In my office, all radios off (wifi, cell, BT, IR), started up VisualGPS to have it look for sats... power consumption jumped almost 150ma while it tried to find sats. I'll see what it looks like once I can get it to sat lock on the drive home.
