dpadctl is a midi (.mid) file and so I'm not sure just renaming it would work. Also renaming it does not change the extension unless the extension is shown (and changed). I converted the Midi2Wave_079_4098.wav file (flatline) that saumaun uploaded to a midi and then renamed it dpadctl.mid. You can try this to see if it helps.
