For what it's worth, I am going to try all the suggests (well, the free ones anyway) and report back as I think this is a big issue. It really bugs me that I can't re-assign the OK button like I could on the 6700.

I tried wtask and am impressed with the software, but couldn't find a setting to allow pressing the OK button to close the application. When I try it, it merely minimizes it.

I still plan to try Magic Button, Quick Menu, and Smartkeys. I'm not sure I'll try the HTC task manager as I've heard too many bad things.

AE Button Plus is free, sort of.
What is the difference between trial and registered version?
Two things only:

1. Splash screen appears during device starting up.
2. "Action list" is blocked in trial mode

And it does allow mapping of the OK key to close apps.

On my 6800 there is an app called Running Programs that came with the phone. I hooked it up to the today screen and when I finish running apps
I just go back to the today screen like you normally do and push the
icon and it shows whats still running and it cuts it all off. And its FREE and
it works every time, even on Active Sync.

I like AE button no doubt, but i think it gets outclassed by another program

for one, Hbutton can take control of the hardbuttons and allow actions depending on time..... i have my message button set so if i hold it down it'll do three quick vibrates, one vibrate = wtask launcher, two vibrates = flashlight, three vibrates = quit current program

AE does a great job at mapping none hardkeys, but i dont think it functions better than Hbutton on actural hard buttons

Sounds interesting, is it able to map the Start Menu/OK keys? Downloading it now, maybe ill try running both programs (have each app. run ½ the buttons)
Been playing with it for abot an hour. I think that i'll use it to map buttons 1 & 2 and have AEButton Plus do the rest. I like the fact that it show you the name of the app before openining it.

Magic Button doesn't close apps using the OK button - only pressing the screen.

Smartskey is really nice and does the job but it bugs me the the right softkey closes the application instead of letting you us the OK button.

Quick Menu works great! It has a pretty small footprint and also gives you a lot of ability to customize. I really like how it can put the battery life and RAM amount left in the top right hand corner on the Today Screen (where the "X" to close programs would usually go). Having said that, I don't think the extra features are worth keeping it around if AEButton plus lets me use the OK button and has a small footprint.

Nice to hear Hbutton works. It didn't work with the WM6 kitchen for the 6700.

Cool, I'm convinced to try that combo as well.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I had a question for Darkness or someone that might know the answer?

Is there a program that I can use to change the function of the external keys for say, backlight only off?

right now I use software that I manual turn the backlight off while Im streaming music so that it keeps playing, would love to have the option to hit like the power button once, and it just turns the back light off, and or hold it down to put phone in suspend mode.

Not sure if I explained that good, hope you get what Im looking for.

Thanks!

Not Darkness LOL but have you tried MortPlayer PMP app? It will let you kill either the back light or the screen itself, it'll even keep the screen off & let you cycle through music with the hardbuttons without waking up the screen (you must re-hit the button you set to control the screen to get the screen back on).

Nice setup, esp when you have lots of streams or if you want to go PMP with your unit.
