warning: above (coping pim.vol) does not work if moving from stock rom to AKU 3.x, or from Stock to WM6, or from AKU 3.x to WM6.

But yep, works fine for hard resets and flashing tweaked roms of same vintage as you are running, if you add step 4

Step 4. Soft reset

Now you are done

The best way I've found so far:

Step 1: copy the pim.vol file from the root of your device onto the storage card.

Step 2: flash your rom.

Step 3: copy it back. You are done.

That's it! And heck, doing it this way also backs up your calendar and tasks.
Not so simple. I think PIM.vol also contains info about what was changed last. If that information is incorrent, the next time you sync it could screw things up.

Did i mention mail2web and exchange hosting also works between devices? I went from a smartphone on T-mobile to the Mogul, and it copied all my personal stuff for me over the air!

For me, PIM Backup works great. It backs up everything. It does not need to be installed on your device. You just double click the exe and away you go. I backup into the storage card and restore from there when needed.

Mail2web is fast and free. I can't believe some of the steps you guys are suggesting. No reason to connect to a PC except to flash a rom. I also keep all of my software on my card, I can hard reset and be back to functioning inside of 15 minutes.

Another vote for PIM Backup. Awesome app. I can hard reset and have my contacts back in 2 seconds.
