Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
AmazeGPS is a decent enough free turn by turn with voice, but I think some of the maps go back to 2007. I'm hoping google will eventually offer their's for WM.

Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
Its not free but I use Garmin Mobile XT on mine and I love it. It doesn't wait until after you've passed your turn to say turn left.

I use Amaze GPS and love it because it is free and I never have a problem with the timing of the instruction. I just can't see how you can go wrong with it.

CoPilot Live 8 is what I installed. $19.95...
I also like GCZII for geocaching. |

Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
Quite a few people seem to like CoPilot since its so cheap, but I haven't tried it since v7. It was pretty nicely polished back then and worked good. I'm not sure if it has TTS or not.
iGuidance 2009 seemed to have jerky motions but it had TTS and the interface looks dated. iGo has a nice interface, good POI's, and pretty good maps, but you have to do some hunting for this. It can also do TTS with some hacks. I always go back to Garmin Mobile XT though. The maps are just as good as the standalone units, same as the POI database. The driving movement isn't as fluid as iGO since it updates every second or two, but still good enough. The thing I love about it is the online features. You can have it check for traffic (but it only checks it while calculating a route, not during the route), and you can use Google Local Search. This makes your POI database virtually endless since the online version is constantly updated. This feature alone has helped me out when the POI database was outdated. Sure, you could load up Google Maps and search that way, but its nice having it in one app. It can also check gas prices, weather, and flight status. The downsides? No TTS, not fluid driving movement, and when you guy it you have to use the SD card it comes on unless you find a way to unlock it.

Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
I just purchased Copilot Live 8 about a month ago and couldn't be more happy. I was using Google Maps previously. I had to have something that would be more navigation friendly so I wouldn't have to play with the phone while trying to drive and really wanted to have voice directions. Even though it's not free, but for $20, I don't think you could go wrong.

Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
Have to agree on Copilot Live 8 - works very well, has a lot of features, and for $20, it will tide me over until google gets around to WinMo. Sure beats my old huge $900 Garmin device from 2002...

Re: BEST GPS v. Navigator
I also like Copilot Live (especially on sale).
Very impressed with it, although at first I didn't think it had speech. Turns out it simply waits until you're a little bit closer to turns than my Garmin Nuvi does. And it doesn't immediately give directions when you set a destination... you have to move a bit. Anyone know some good dash mounts for it, btw? I bought an articulated suction cup window mount off eBay from China for around $15 and it's nice... but I'd rather have a bean bag type to sit on my Grand Cherokee's flat dash tray. |
