This is the same issue I had. If you aren't rooted and running the Hero fully stock, after a certain number of Apps, the phone goes crazy after a soft-reset. Everything crashes, hence the pop-ups, and you have no service. Just uninstall the last few apps and soft reset again and everything should be back to normal.

I think the number of apps varies, I'm at about 97-98 apps and ran into this problem, but it seems to be only with some apps and not others. So it's all over the place, but if it happens, uninstall, soft reset and you are good to go.

Hope that helps.

I'm not even close to having 100 apps though is the thing. I had a feeling it had something to do with an app I installed so I uninstalled it. When turning the phone back on, everything came back to normal so I knew it was probably that app which I installed messed everything up. This is another issue they need to fix. I was about to perform a hard reset, but I didn't want to give up and just lose everything which is why I took about an hour to figure it out.

Wirelessly posted (HTC Hero: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 1.5; en-us; A6277 Build/CUPCAKE) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.2 Mobile Safari/525.20.1)

The app number varies, some phones can't go over 70, some can't breach 100.
